Hi Guys, really need your help. I am swapping springs on my 997 and after successfully changing the near side, the far side has stopped me in my tracks. The thread and nut on the top of the shocker is rusty and I cannot get the nut to move at all. I have sprayed the sh*t out of it with WD40 and left it overnight.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Hi, WD40 isn't really a penatrent for rusty nuts, plus gas is better. Having said that access looks good so just carefully dremmel the nut as close to the thread as you can all the way across it should then split as you apply torque trying to undo it.

Hope this helps

They have a spout-tin and aerosol version, is one preferred or more effective than the other?

What are you using, an open ended spanner? Have you not got the angle to extend it with a piece of scaffolding or wide jack handle? The extra leverage will unwind that.

A good impact gun usually works wonders.

But cutting the old nut off carefully will be fairly foolproof

Agreed plus gas is much better than WD40 also wire brush the exposed thread clean so when it starts moving it's easier.

Just use a nut splitter to get it off in a couple of minutes.

Mix ATF and lacquer thinners in equal parts and let it soak in. Warm it up with a heat gun before to let it all expand a bit if you can and repeat it a few times.
If you are a gadget guy, try to find some Mouse Milk, it is great stuff.

What's the pipe sticking out the top for? A ring spanner or socket will always be better than an open spanner, plus a socket on a T-bar allows the application of a cheater in the form of a length of pipe.

The tube is an electrical cable. These are off a 911 with PASM. The shocks have a valve inside that regulates oil (or gas??) flow to adjust the softness/hardness.

I actually ended up cutting the bolt off. I have ordered another from the Porsche catalogue and i'm just waiting for it to arrive. Means no driving this weekend frown
