Taken from underneath a car this morning, OE steel pipes still covered in the grey coating:

Steel, not copper. Copper to copper brake pipe joints are not a good idea for the same reason that stacking multiple ring terminations on a bolt isn't. Copper is very malleable and will tend to flow under pressure, giving you a poor connection in one case and a leaking joint in the other.

From what I understand, the only reason the joint in my OP should be used is for connecting a copper line to steel. Copper to copper should be the female connector as previously advised. Going to speak to them about it tomorrow smile
