Morning all,

Need a bit of help sorting my current daily driver out.
Its a 2003 Seat Ibiza 1.4 S 3dr covered 70k.
Two days ago i got in the car and drove away from home as normal when i noticed an odd 'rattling' sound. It sounds very metallic - i.e. metal on metal.

From a brief look underneath the car it doesnt look as thought there is anything obvious loose or knocking (had a quick prod of the springs / drop links etc. There doesnt seem to be any effect on driving or steering and the sound is intermittent in that it will be there for 2/3 miles then stop for 5/6 miles then restart again all at various speeds/gears!? It doesn't make much sense to me. The sound seems to be coming from the passenger side front wheel if thats any help.

Anyone had any experience or know what this could possibly be?!

I'm not to keen on dropping it off at my local without some ideas as they will end up changing everything at some overly inflated cost and i wont be using the car much after the end of the month.

Any help would be appreciated as its bloody irritating!!

Obviously, it could be many things, but one easy one to rule out/highlight is brake pads rattling around, which can sound like you describe.

Try driving along & when it next happens "drag" the brakes gently with your left foot while still driving normally & see if this stops it, if it does you know what it is.

Cheers, i'll give that a go when i leave off, failing that i'll have to suck it up and book it into the local indy and hope they dont see it as an opportunity to earn some extra beer tokens..!

I just dont trust garages in general to be honest with you, i have never found one who is genuine or honest about the work they are looking at doing.

I am a full time self employed mechanic and can tell you that the majority of small garages and one man bands are not generally in the business to rip people off but to do a good job at a reasonable price too the customer and a reasonable profit for us. While you say you dont trust any garage, no garage wants customers like you, no matter how much you go out of your way to help them there never happy and constantly think there being ripped off. I allways give my customers a realistic estimate off what repairs will cost and will tell them if I dont think the car is worth it, the usual response is, "its worth it to me", in that case I send them off to think about and if they come back still wanting the repairs done then Im happy to take their money.

On the earlier models like yours the anti roll bar has plastic bits at the end that break allowing the roll bar to knock around, it could be that.
