Long time lurker first time poster with a tire issue/question

Basically I went to kwikfit (I know! But to be fair they were across the road from my work, they did my MOT last year, normal fee + £20 for something to pass it, did my wife's car this year was a clean pass) to get a tire after somehow ripping a chunk out of inner sidewall, no problems there.

But the manager/top bloke walked behind my car while on the ramp, glanced at back wheel then came to tell me I had a 'twisted' tire. Is this the usual kwik fit marketing we all know and love or could there be some truth to it? it's not something I've ever heard of but he was making it out to be concerning

what exactly is a twisted tire? I'd be expecting something like http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/forum/uploads/mon... but it looked 'ok' apart from being older, it was still legal, holding air, no gouges, etc

I think you really need to ask him, it is not a phrase I have heard before, not saying it doesn't exist/can't happen, just never heard of it.

Without seeing what you're referring to, impossible to say.

Its not something I've ever heard of either which got me wondering is he pulling my wire or or should I be worried

I'll try and get a pic at some point

I've been looking on Google & it's been about as good as a fart in a wind tunnel

Only been able to find one example that describes it as being when the the cords of the tire are deformed and will look like a wobble or zig-zag when moving

To my untrained eye, no, to kwik fit man, it must be, which is why I'm trying to find out more about it, seems to be such a rare thing though

Leave, get a second opinion. Kwik-fit are world reknowned for finding extra work creatively.

That'd be the sort of Kwik Fit fitter that could only see 4 of the 5 studs holding the wheel onto my Insipid, presumably? eek

Fortunately I spotted his mistake before he took a lump hammer to the "stuck" rim!

In my defence, the only reason I was there in the first place was that it was a Saturday, they were the only place for miles with the tyre size I needed, and the alternative was to not take She Who Must Be Obeyed to see her sister for a birthday meal 130 miles away on the Sunday!

Took me out to the car spun the back wheel, pointing to the inside edge

"See that? The tyre is twisted, should really change that soon, you'll feel it vibrating in the car"

"Oh so it is, I will keep an eye on it though there's been no vibrating"

Back home, googled it, next to nothing

If he's been honest then fair enough, but just got this feeling that he was trying to pump me for another £90 for a tyre

For all its a budget (Fullrun make/ditch-hunter, on the car when I bought it last year, I've had no issues with it or any of the other tyres (other than the gouge that took me to kwik fit in the first place) even the MOT was passed (with a minor emission problem) at the same place, no mention of tyres

This is why I used to avoid them, now they're conveniently placed & have pleasantly surprised me the past couple of visits

That's exactly what it is. I have heard the expression several times over the years and I'm surprised that so many others have not. It has happened to me about two or three times in over forty years of driving. You should see the twist if you jack up the car and spin the wheel while you watch it from directly in front or behind the wheel, ie: end-on. Don't go under the car while it is on the jack! Some of the cords in the tyre have broken or stretched so that the carcas of the tyre is distorted.

PS: I don't work for Kwikfit. biggrin

I've heard many things said about tyres.....some a good description, some completely bonkers. Hence posting such a thing on a forum...where the poster never seen the tyre and is reliant on a well renowned chain of dummies who like to con people into new tyres...

Really...it could mean absolutely anything !
