Two MOTs and a brake check have told us that the discs/pads are pitted but not enough to impair performance, and that we'll need to replace the brakes 'soon'. We can hear some friction noise on braking, like some grit has got in there, but braking is actually better than our old car so we're not worried about safety yet. No-one has implied that it's dangerous.

At what point should we get the pads/discs changed? And is it only the pads/discs that would be affected by the friction noise or could we be causing damage to other parts too?

It's a Honda Jazz, £300+ to replace so don't want to do it early if we can help it.

Are you happy to have a look yourself? If so you are just looking at the thickness of a couple of components basically.

Failing that a set of pads and discs is about £50 per axel from Euro car parts. If you want a mechanic to fit them that's only about an hours work.

That is a mad price. I've just done the front discs and pads on a 545i (Bosch parts) including a mechanic to fit them for £250.

I've just done a quick google and Brembo discs and pads should be about £100 for your Jazz. Mobile mechanic £50 to fit.

The reason I say this is I got an advisory for discs on a Suzuki Swift saying inner face corrosion. The outer face was fine as was the performance. As it was a new to me car I had the wheel off and looked at the inner face, it was bad. It looked like someone had fitted new pads to a corroded disc and they hadn't been able to clean the outer edge leaving a big area of corrosion and a step in the pad. Quite surprised it was just an advisory.

If you've had the same for two years now I'd replace them but not at £300.

Edited to add eurocarparts seem to be £80ish for a whole set of front discs and pads (Brembo) if you go cheapest it looks like near £50 a full set is possible.

I'd say you need a new mechanic / garage to the one wanting £300.

They should be replaced when they worn etc to a point they need replaced...and of course taking into mind what sort of mileage and driving you actually do, and how long it may be before your next maintenance schedule.

And as others say, for a basic disc/pad change that price does seem ma bit excessive even if it was all 4 corners.

But the only person who can say if they need replaced, is the person looking at them
