MOT brake testing...and car weight
Discussion
Had a car tested today, the efficiency of the rears was JUST enough but.....the tester said the car was rated as weighing just over 2 tonne...
its a skoda superb greenline hatch and NO way does it weigh that, in fact 1.5kg is a tad high, so...
if he had entered 1.5kg I assume the % would be higher? he couldnt find a kerbside weight for it...

10 seconds on google shows that the gross weight is around 2 tonne, the kerb weight is just over 1500kg. Not sure if there any restrictions as to where the MOT guy is supposed to get his info from though.
not sure which figure they use.... they seemed shocked at 2tonne....id assume their DVLA link would tell themCan they test brakes against a theoretical MAM? (as it is now)
If the vehicle is being tested for the first time the computer doesn't always give a brake testing weight. This is very common with VAG group vehicles for some reason. Weight charts are the next port of call, for a Superb anywhere from 1550kg to 1750kg depending on model. If all else fails the tester should carry out a decelerometer test, not just make a weight up!
I thought that the brake testing machine weighed each axle in succession and this was a source of error?
My 2007 Ibiza weighed 1080 kg one year, but the book weight is more like 1250 kg, I've not really done anything to reduce the weight so it did make me curious as to what it actually was, although I've never got around to going to a weighbridge.

Not every MOT station has a brake tester that measures the axle weight, in fact most don't.
The figures supplied on the MOT computer and various weight charts etc are a calculation based on manufacturers figures, average passenger weight and so on. The resulting differences highlight many of grey areas MOT testers have to contend with.
