Had a clunking type noise at low speed turning on my 10 plate MK4 Mondeo. As it was getting worse thought it would be a good idea to get it looked at.

Put the car in to Ford, awaited the phone call to be told there is the suspension bearing needed to be changed, said okay to the work (plus they wanted to do both sides) but as I wasn't sure what they where talking about I asked for the old parts.

When I picked the car up I found out it was actually the strut top mount that had been replaced. Supposedly it had cracked and that was what caused the noise, the noise had gone on leaving the garage so it had been fixed, but I was never that trusting of there 'cracked' diagnosis.

Took the top mounts apart today, see picture below, don't think a crack was an issue also think both sides didn't need to be done but hey ho. Live and learn.

The only thing with suspension joints/bushes/bearings is that both sides get the same amount of wear & tear, so while the car is in the air anyway it doesn't take twice as long to do both, however, if the other one goes next week/month/year it will cost more than twice as much to do both.

Good preventative maintenance strategy, even if it hurts the wallet at the time.
