Hi,

I have a camper van, 4 tonnes max total weight, front axle 2.0T max and rear axle 2.5T max, Fiat Ducati Maxi.

It is currently fitted with Vanco Camper tyres 225/75 16 which are CP rated.

They give an awful ride. So firm.

I think this is due to the stiff sidewall needed to qualify as a CP tyre.

The van is used everyday and doesn’t stand around so I want to move to C tyres for a softer, more comfortable ride.

If you’re a tyre fitter, in your experience which van tyre in 225 75 16 fitment will have the softest sidewall and hence the most comfortable ride?

I had this issue a while back.

In theory you should only fit what is on the tyre pressure data plate on the vehicle as I think the insurance company might get twitchy if you ever needed to claim and had the wrong type fitted.

Now, I have never driven on a CP rated tyre but all I can say is a 109 index C is just about bearable.

On my plate, it shows I could also fit 104 rated tyre which will get a slightly softer ride but probably at the expense of handling, but also has the disadvantage of there being only around 3-4 available in my size.

Your ultimate guide to what you could fit is the axle rating plate which again should be on a label on the camper somewhere, and then look at a tyre index chart.

Also, I think that they are also rated taking into account the moving mass eg, cornering , braking etc

Eta: I also see you have found the axle rating, and in which case, I believe all four should be rated at what the rear axle requires.

I’m sure someone more knowledgable will say it’s all wrong but that’s what I have gone by.

Michelin Agilis Cross Climates (not the camper van version) give a much better ride than the campervan tyres which were fitted previously. 3.5t van with 225/65 x 16.
(Not a tyre fitter)

My van is old enough for CP not to be invented when it was registered so I need to have C tyres.

It currently has 116 CP at only 55psi front and 65psi rear.

Rear suspension is fine but the front crashes and bangs all over the place. Just need to find a way to soften it down.

fking hell 116 must be like driving with hard rubber fitted !

For 2.5T yeah the Michelin should be much better.

Trouble is after a few his and miles you’ll find them hard as well as you get used to them.

Just found this which gives a bit more info.

I’ve had Agilis cross climates before on a previous van but I had nothing else to compare to on that van as I never changed tyres.

Have you changed from CP tyres to Agilis Cross Climate and got a better ride? If so, that’s really useful info.
