Andy

3.5k is not unrealistic , it will depend on the starting condition and prep of the vehicle assuming your after the best possible finish.

Defcon5

Enzo was painted due to hard 20k of track days , fast use and a few scuffs and scrapes and a bit of colour coding , a long thread and HD video footage of the entire process will be released when i can.

we use PPG max mayer Glasurit lechler (some times)

Yes glasurit is stupidly expensive thou .

The only thing Lechler I use is Ti green, basecoat isn't all that but it is cheap.

The paint I bought and found nice to use was Lechler... must admit I thought it was the higher end of the range so I've learnt something.

I've got around 7 litres of lechler pearl orange in 2 pack... its around 5 years old and unopened, I have wondered what it being that old would mean, harder to spray? not durable?

Its probably ok, but pearls in particular like to settle out from the rest of the pigment. Wouldnt paint a car in it personally, unless it was an old Corsa or something!

Lechler is very cheap end of the market,

we have found that when we used to use other bodyshops for paintwork (this included my fathers old bodyshop staff that now either have their own company or work for new company) would get really poor colour matches on the customers cars , sometimes shockingly bad.

The amount of times i was told there is only one shade for that colour code so its not them and lechler are very good.

Even my painter now (who was trained by me and my dad over 15 years ago)used mainly lechler in all the bodyshops he has worked at and again got the impression it was very good paint.

Since working with me for last few years and trying different brands he has been shocked on how different one from the other are.

Yes found PPG lays down the best (base coat this is) which in turns gives a better top coat finish.

found max mayer to be very good jack of all trades.

Glasurit to be very expensive but give the best colour match and metallic is very close , and their lacquers are hard too.

To give you an idea of different paint companys ,

we looked up many colours in different systems to do many spray out cards to come up with best colour match before even starting the work.

Lechler are constantly only showing 1-3 variants (shades) of colour for a colour code , compared to 10-14 in a different company's scheme.

Not the best example of shades (as its red and tv/pc screens struggle with reds)_

here are some spray out cards done for the enzo.

this is the standard option shade from 5 different schemes

in natural light

in 3m colour checker light

the difference between one scheme and another is just plain silly.

Also we have painted cars that have been painted in the past by us or kds staff while working for another paint company. so we know what it was painted with and what colour and shade (my car included in the list).

we have noted even on solid colours like my BMW M3 that the standard shade colour in old solvent is now a different shade in the standard water base system (lechler this is)

I would only paint a car in the latest "current" system for future proofing as much as possible indeed if possible.

And make sure absolutely of the shade variant your getting too.

Just my thoughts

Max Meyer is a good scheme but since brown brothers shut their norwich branch and another I used to use when I worked down south, I switched schemes.

As you know MM is bottom of PPGs chain, nexa in for middle and ppg at the top, the support for formulations was poor, they are more interested in support for the more expensive versions, logical but frustrating.

Always liked the MM clearcoats.

Its rare a standard shade works first time for any car hence your spray out cards and colour chips from the paint supplier, when you explain to people the whole process of a repair from start to finish they soon realise why a good job costs quite a but more than a quick blow over!
