Hi All,

I've got a set of RAYS split rims for my MR2 that are in sore need of a refurb. They don't look like they've seen any attention in 20 years.

One wheel is kerbed on the lip unfortunately but the rest are just in a sorry state, peeling/milky lacquer, chips etc. so need stripped right back and done fresh.

I was planning on doing them myself since it's the track car and I feel like learning/giving it a go.

I'm looking for some help on products to use and any tips at each stage. With it being a track car, a polished lip is gonig to be nice, but too much work to maintain. So I'm thinking gold centre of wheel, I'm undecided on the lip colour. Probably silver.
So far I have:

Range of 240 - 2500 wet and dry for the rubbing down. Split the rim, attack it with degreaser and cleaners (recommend me a degreaser/cleaner for this stage please) then start rubbing it all down to get old paint off. Start with 240 and build up in steps up to 2000.
Next grind down the kerbed part of wheel to get a smooth finish. Blend it in to the rest of the wheel to avoid "craters" and rub this wheel down like the rest, 240 --> 2000.

Next, primer, 3 coats and rub down with 2500 after each coat for a smooth base. Recommend me a primer?
Painting next. Now I don't have a gun, what are my best options or is it best to get a hold of a second hand gun? 3 coats of paint, rubbing down with 2500 after each coat has dried.
Lacquer, again, 3 coats, rubbing down with 2500 after each coat. Can someone recommend a good lacquer?

Then obviously since it's split rim, rebuild the wheel, seal the lip and put the bolts back in using a criss-cross method.

have I missed any steps out or am I making it sound easier than it actually is?
