Build up to it from a reasonably course grit (200 is quite good) to 800-plus. It's also worth having a look at guide coat etc for a really good finish.

Go with 600-800 to finish before colour coats, any finer and you risk the paint not adhering as well.

That would be fine as long as you have a reasonably smooth base. If you're using lacquer you apply it after your final colour coat.

At work we use

360-400 for the first primer coat
600 for the pre colour coat

(I prepare and spray paint boats inc steel, aluminium, GRP and wood)

It depends what you're using but you can spray clear coat 20-30mins after the top colour coat. Some people will suggest doing it sooner, some leave it longer but most do it the same day as the final colour coat to help adhesion.

Thanks I'll get some 600 then. After I spray the finnish coat how long do I need to leave before I spray the lacquer?

P.S. Don't expect a mirror finish from a DIY spray after your clear coats, you'll have to wet sand with 1200+ once you've finished to get rid of the orange peel.

Wait at least 24 hours before you lacquer the colour coat (longer if humid/cold)

I'd look into it yourself- try googling as my advice and leafspring's goes against each other.

Don't wait 24 hours, the laquer won't adhere to the paint properly.

There are literally thousands of videos on YouTube that can teach you exactly what you need to know about car body repairs. Perhaps you, riley26 and tomsim (I'm assuming these are both you as well given all three of you have the same posting style and are all asking about the same rusty Suzuki Swift) can watch some of them...

Get the Technical Data Sheets for the primer & paint you are using from the paint supplier. These will tell you all you need to know about how to apply them, the steps to be taken between materials incl grades of sandpaper, correct air pressure, thinning, flash off time between coats, how quickly the next should be applied etc etc.
Example here: http://www.hex.co.uk/tds/lesonal/Technical%20Data%...

^^^ that

In the absence of the data sheets I use at work, I got the 24hr bit off the back of a rattle can of Halfords lacquer paperbag I happened to have at hand.
