Morning guys

I have some old stainless steel oversill which need to go back on my old Maserati project. There are several scratches on the in addition to them being generally dull.

What's the best way to bring these back to mirror fresh? I have a DA polisher if that's any use!

Cheers

Paul

You'd generally sand it back with a flap wheel or similar, and then finish with a number of stages using polishing mops and polishing compounds, either on a fixed or hand held machine. Depending on the state of them (how deep the scratches are) and the thickness of the metal and what surface detail is on them will determine how difficult it will be to do.

It's the sort of thing electroplaters might do, so might be worth ringing one and seeing if you can get it done for beer money.

I've used varying grades of wet & dry sanding finishing with a metal polish/solvent with pretty good results. Depending what it was & how bad, I started with either 400 or 600, went to 800, 1200 then finished with 2400 before polishing with solvent.

this is a bit vague for the minute. . .I will try and get the guys number for you.. . pretty sure his name is Barry, and you will find him in a shed, at Holly Cottage Nursery, which is off the Heathlands road, which itself is off nine mile ride. You drive into the nursey, and bear to the right, and he is tucked round the back !
I have left a message with a mate for his number and will post it as and when.
this is the guy. . .

Firstly, apologies for the typo in the title, buttons too small on the HTC!

Secondly, Thanks for all the help guys.

I'm Newcastle / Teesside based and have tried the local metal finisher who has done other plating and they couldn't help.

They are large full-length stainless steel sill covers and are free from deep marks but are very 'tired' and are covered in scratches, they almost look 'brushed' in places. I'm going to have a bash at home, flatten back with some very fine wet&dry then have a go with this polishing kit to see whether I can get a presentable finish.

I'll post up some pictures of before, during, and after.

Cheers
