So some nice person has left me with scrapes/dents on my front wing of my Mk1 Audi TT. Lucky old me, it must be Christmas already! smash

Believe it or not, in 12 years of driving this is the first time it's happened and the first time I need bodywork on a car. What's the best course of action? Try and find a replacement wing in the same colour (Avus Silver) or just get it repaired?

Obviously the concern with a replacement panel is colour match, so does anyone have an idea what I should be paying for a decent (yet not over priced) wing respray? Luckily it's quite localised to the front of the wing and the bumper/bonnet/wheel are unmarked.

I would charge between £150-200 if I can keep it as local as you say.

That's fine, I budgeted £200-£250 so seems i'm about right on the money.

I'll try and grab some photos to give a better indication.

Agreed, that would be no more than £250 in our place.

I have just had a new front wing fitted last week on my year old Zafira, because I reversed into a bush in my garden..(don't ask..hehe..)

It was pretty badly dented:-

In addition the front door was dented, but not too badly, it needed painting also.

They said by the time they messed about bashing it out it would be just as quick to bang a new wing on.

I had the option of a pattern wing at £45, or a genuine Vauxhall part at around £150. I chose the former.

The work was completed in two days and was 100% perfect...very satisfied.....£320 all in.

We have used good quality pattern parts, normally from ECP to keep the cost down , TUV approved and never had a fitment issue, things are different to how they used to be, i remember buying pattern sills and a panels for mini's and they weren't even close..

Remember the old Metro pattern wings, gaps you could get ya fingers thru and you were lucky if the swage lines lined up.

Bit of an update to this..

Been going around getting quotes and £200-£300 seems the going rate at the more established body shops. In this category I've narrowed it down to one place simply called 'the bodyshop' it has some good reviews and the chap seemed genuinely interested and sincere. £300 all in including spraying my door handle and my new rear arch spats (someone knocked the offside one off) whilst the car is in. He said he'll spray the front section of the wing, blend the wing towards the rear but he'd have to blend into the front bumper. It was the most expensive quote but for the sake of £50 I'd rather go here as I felt comfortable with them, plus I don't think it's an OTT price really.

However, I've been to see a local young chap who is into his VW's, he's been spraying for a few years now and he shares a large unit in a (nice) industrial estate in Dronfield. He's young, eager and has more to prove - just obviously not wealthy enough to set up big time yet. He explained his methods and he pretty much said the same as some of the bigger body shops, he said he didn't need to blend the bumper. Best part is, £160 - that includes the wing, door handle, arch spats AND off side rear bumper corner (have a few very small scuffs very close to where the arch spat was knocked off) and also the interior rear brace bar in body colour. That'll be the Avus silver bodywork 99% mint.

What do I do?

For me as a painter myself, £160 sounds cheap.

What quality of products is the lad going to use?

Honestly, I'm unsure. What should I be asking of him/looking out for?

I doubt he's VAT registered so that's a saving and I expect working for cash with less overheads will give you another saving.

Always a low baller. I quoted a trader this week who wanted a cracked bumper repairing and repainting, he didnt like my price and said his usual guy would do it for £80 quid. I walked away. As well as running a unit with two employees, there are certain people I wont do work for!

Well,

It's back from the body shop. I'm really happy and confident the other places wouldn't have done any better. So for the money I got a bargain. Front wing, rear bumper corner, arch spats, door handle and rear brace bar. £160 all in.

Quick photo for now as I've only just picked it up and headed to work, i'll give the car a good clean and get some more in the next few days smile

Front bumper looks a different colour to the wing.
