Hi. I hope I'm posting in the right place: I have just bought a car with alloys but I want to sell the alloys on because I need cheaper insurance. I don't know anything about wheels. Do I need to buy new tyres or am I just buying new hubs and hubcaps? Is this a normal service a garage can offer? There is also a silencer I would like removed. And, of course there's the question of how much it will all cost...

It's an Astra (no picture yet). The alloys are 17" TSWs.

Depends on the year / Astra model, but standard wheels probably won't be 17". 16" or 15" is more likely.

Obviously you will therefore need to buy a set of tyres to fit, otherwise the air all falls out.

What size does the handbook say you need?

Lol, thanks, that's helpful smile I'm due to pick up the car this week so I don't have the manual yet. The car is a 2006 Astra Life Twinport S-A, I've looked it up but couldn't find any information on wheel sizes so far.

Most of the car tyre websites will let you see what the standard wheel tyre combo was on a vehicle if you have the registration number or the exact model/age...

blackcircles allows you to search for tyres by registration- so you can find out what you should have..
mytyres.co.uk allows you to search by model or registration (using Opel not Vauxhall as mytyres is a german company)

a 2006 Astra Life Twinport S-A

gives me either a 1.4 twinport ecotec, a 1.6 twinport or a 1.6 twinport ecotec.

the 1.6 twinport was made until 2005, so looking at the 1.6 twinport ecotec (2005-2009) for example you get a choice of 15-18" wheels.

I'd recommend searching by registration...

Are they definitely alloys on it? A lot of the Astra H's came with steel wheels with 'bolt through' hub caps which look like alloy wheels.

IIRC they'll be 15 or 16" from factory though.

EDIT - Sorry just read the thread properly! However, the above wheels I mention would be good ones to refit as they look good but are insurance friendly.

Is the increased insurance preium more than the total cost to purchase new wheels and tyres?

Secondly, go on an Astra forum and offer your alloy wheels in exchange for a set of standard wheels and tyres. Someone will have them.

I guess that's what I'm trying to work out, whether I'll save money by removing them, but I don't know how much I'll save until I know how much the whole job would cost. The difference in insurance is... (oops!) only £37! But I'm sure I was quoted a lower price last week for an Astra Elite, my current quote without the mods is £410, with the mods it's £447, but for the Elite last week, it was £388... looks like I'm quibbling over £60, maybe I shouldn't complain. The wheels do look nice after all...

Thanks, I'm still learning about alloys. Always heard about them, but never appreciated what they were good for.

I've never seen a st of TSW's i liked personally, but i'll reserve judgement til you put a pic up.
If you like them, keep them is the easiest option.
