Hi guys,

So i have an MX-5 and whenever i was the windscreen (doesnt matter what with and yes ive tried new blades) it makes this oily looking smeer right in front of where i need to see!

Does anyone possibly have any idea of what this could be and how to get rid of it!!

Thank you

You need to clean the screen and blades thoroughly. Newspaper and vinegar are quite good.

Newspaper & vinegar is good but sometimes something with a little more abrasion works better. Either a specific windscreen polish or a light t-cut works for me. Make sure your wipers are clean too. Concentrated screen wash is as good as anything.

Try Holts Mixra- (also called screenies) its a white foam for cleaning windscreens, and works really well.

Are they aftermarket "aero" blades?

It looks very much like there's insufficient pressure in the centre of the blade, caused by the tension in the blade being too strong

Clean the screen properly and then use Rain-X - you'll hardly ever need your wipers again....

This (apart from the rain x bit, never worked properly for me!).

We have loads of trouble using non OE aero blades on certain cars, they just don't work properly and leave that patch in the centre. We aren't using cheap eBay ones, valeo etc branded.

Every time it happens we swap them for genuine items which are usually sided and the issue mysteriously dissapears. Some cars are fine and others not.

Put some normal, high quality blades back on and I bet the issue dissapears.

Also clean the screen with brake cleaner or similar, that multicoloured patch is an oily substance that shouldn't be there.

Yeah i have ordered some cleaning stuff for the screen to hopefully clear the oily substance

Also as for the blades. I didnt purchace these blades, they were includes when i bought the car. I just fitted them.
The problem of the smeer was happening even with the origional genuine wipers which i still have. Even after fitting the new blades the problem is still a problem.

Once the cleaner arrives and i can give the screen a good cleaning, i shall let you all know the result.

Thanks all for your help!!

Hi Guys,

I am at a bit of a loss now.

I have tried the vinegar and newspaper.

I also bought some specialist windscreen cleaner called 'Simoniz Mixra Windscreen Cleaner' suggested by blitzracing.

None of this worked in fact it almost seems worst.

I know it isn't the blades.

The smeer is still present and I'm not sure where to turn now.

I'm thinking a scientist!

Does anyone have any ideas? Id rather not have to find a new windscreen.

You could try Jewelers rouge- its a fine red powder used by Windscreen fitters to polish fine scatches out of glass, so it will remove anything on the surface that chemical cleaners wont remove. You mix it into a paste with water, then polish. If this fails Im at a complete loss.

New decent wiper blades. I'd call in at your local main dealers, let them see the problem & buy some OEM blades from them.

i have the original blades in the loft now. The problem is not with the blades.

The problem was there using the original blades so i got some new ones and its still happening.

Driving home in the rain tonight was almost impossible. I simply couldn't see anything

I think you're missing the point. You need to let your dealer look at the problem & buy OEM blades, not just "new" ones. Your dealer should help you make sure the tension etc is correct.

Bar keepers friend comes up every time when removing streaks/stains from windows is mentioned in a few detailing forums I browse. Never used it myself but have seen loads of people get amazing results from it.

I use something like this on the recommendation of my detailer:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-X-1-LITRE-IPA-ISOPROPY... on all my glass inside & out. Cleans everything off & reduces misting inside. On the outside I've finished off with this:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gtechniq-ClearVision-Smart... which works a treat (you drive along & the rain goes UP the windscreen & you hardly need your wipers.
