I've used good old Auto Glym Super Resin Polish since I was 12 years old and trying to make a few quid polishing my parents' cars. 19 years later and I still use it on all my cars. Always found it a decent general purpose polish: it gets rid of fine scratches and haze, shifts tar spots and stubborn insect residue, gives a decent shine, doesn't cost the earth and is pretty easy to apply.

As it's a very old product, I can't help thinking that there must be a newer, more advanced equivalent these days that does a better job all round, i.e better shine without affecting the ease of use and bug-shifting ability, or better at masking scratches without taking huge effort to apply and costing a fortune. And as I've pretty much depleted my current bottle of the stuff today now is as good a time as any to try something new.

For all I know there could be a million and one better options these days, so any recommendations from folk who've tried them would be most helpful! smile

There are a million and one alternatives ! go look on detailing world.

SRP has been changed over the years, so its not exactly the same product you bought years ago. IIRC it won an award fairly recently.

If you still find it easy/good to use then there is no reason to stop. Equally, if you fancy giving something else a go have a look on detaiiling world and pick one!
I use 3M Ultrafina as I find its easier to use, especially on a DA.

SRP has many limitations but it is good at what you describe.

Cheap, easy to use and does improve appearance.

I think if you want a better result you are still looking at a multi stage process i.e. clay (or equivalent), polish / correction, seal etc

You could do a lot worse than Bilt Hamber cleanser-polish. I much prefer it to SRP, which isn't to say that SRP is a bad product by any means, but the BH one really does cut through the crud that bonds to the paintwork (even after claying) and leaves a very silky smooth finish with excellent filling abilities.

It's fairly durable on its own, but top it with a wax for improved longevity.

Bit of a cliche but the differences are mainly in the prep these days i.e. slather a £100 tub of Zymol on a swirled manky car and it'll look like crap whilst a £5 bottle of SRP on a car with defect free clean paint will look amazing.

Basically spend money on tools and process first, then if you have some left over spend it on more expensive products.

I have used it for years but just found out I wasn't using it to its full potential. You have to work it, not use it like a wax. I applied with my DA and worked until clear, then topped with dodo juice supernatural hybrid. On a dark blue metallic, looks great.

Autosmart Topaz offers better results than Super Resin and is much easier to use...cheaper too!

Thanks chaps. That Detailing World site turned out to be a really good read smile

From what I've read I'm going to stick with the Auto Glym, it seems to be fairly well thought-of amongst the DW forumists. But perhaps use it a different way...

I've always used the SRP as my one and only paint treatment, and it turns out that just like you, Nobbles, I've been doing it all wrong! I at least need to buy a clay bar and a wax/seal type product. Also pondering having a go at machine polishing. I'm apprehensive about using a machine, in case I clumsily ruin paintwork with it, but then the Capri needs a respray anyway so before that happens it would be an ideal guinea pig, now where can I get a cheapish DA from...

For the final finish that up to now I've neglected, I think I'll pick up some Auto Glym Liquid Hardwax. It's cheap enough and again gets positive comments on DW. It'll be a cold day in hell before I spend three figures on a pot of polish, so all the fancy Zymol gear is out anyway! wink

Shopping list getting bigger and bigger the more time I spend on the DW forum...
More Auto Glym SRP
Auto Glym Liquid Hardwax
Clay bar (Bilt Hamber ones look best value)
DA polishing machine + pads
Auto Glym glass polish (do like this stuff, nearly run out though)
Grit Guards
etc etc. Undoubtedly will find more.

Halfords are getting quite good these days and pretty much everything is on 3 for 2. They sell "normal" clay bars as well as the newer clay mitts which seem to get good feedback.

Small point but with 3 for 2 and no postage to bother about..

You may want to have a look at this site:-

http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/

Detailed instructions on every item they sell + "how to guides " on most things "detailing".

The latest version of SRP really is much better than the SRP of old. I tried SRP again fairly recently and was very impressed with it. I'm applying it by hand of course, so that will be a major factor in polish choice.

SRP used with the extra gloss protection stuff they do is all my mate and I use. Used correctly I don't think there are many who could complain. Having said all that I have been tempted to give Meguiars stuff a try.

uh oh someones getting hooked hehe

I don't think you need ro spend silly amounts to get a result, but even so it does start adding up when you adding more stages to the wash..

I too would suggest a clay mitt instead of a clay bar. They've been getting great reviews, most people on DW rate them highly, plus it only takes about 15 minutes to do the whole car. The Farecla G3 is in the Halfords 3 for 2 just now too.

Is there any benefit in spending lots on a da polisher or would something like this do? http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/kestrel-da...

Those kestrel machines appear to be quite popular, I think you'd be fine but as always check on DW - there are a few models, e.g. http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing-machines/c... and I don't know the exact differences so may be worth having a good read and make sure that you get the best one for your use - for £30 the next one up might be worthwhile- on the other hand it might be a waste of money.

ETA: FOund this, if still running it gives £15 off ? http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.p...

I would recommend the mequiars clay kit, although I haven't tried the mitt. I have never gad an issue with the mequiars one but changed to the bilt hamber clay bar that can be used with water, but find it marrs and scratches. I have just reverted back to the mequiars.

I have always used SRP and probably always will until something comes along that's vastly better.

Always got a bottle in my detailing kit, does exactly the job it says it does, easy to work with. The improved formula is improved over the older stuff and as mentioned if its available on the Halfords offer get that x 2 and a bottle of the glass polish, great value.
