I've been quite lazy and regularly used those local hand car washes but they don't do a great job on the wheels. So I'm looking at it doing the job properly myself

I don't know what the correct process to follow is. I've seen this product has really good reviews http://www.bilthamber.com/auto-wheel-1 If I apply that, is there another step afterwards to protect the wheels and keep them in good condition for longer? Or is it as simple as the video makes it look and that is all that is required?

You can wax the wheels afterwards to make a barrier from brake dust and make future cleans easier. Edit, like this:

Any particular wax that is more suited to the job than another?

There are sealants specifically designed for wheels like this one http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewPro...

Alternatively you can get sealants designed to resist high temperatures (i.e. heat from brakes) like 1000p http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewPro...

Like the poster above said, there are specific products available. I just use the Megs wax I use on the car bodywork.

1. Wash wheels as you normally would. If you can, use Wheel-woolies, they are excellent.
2. Spray on Iron-X and leave for 5 mins.
3. Wash off Iron-x and dry the wheels.
4. Apply sealant. I use Wonder Wheels sealant as a top up and C5 Wheel armour once a year. If you use C5, prep by using Panel-wipe. Keeps them mint.

Seriously, check out the Iron-X, its amazing stuff.

What do you use to dry the wheels? And what do you use to apply the sealant?

You dry your wheels with a decent drying towel, unless you have a small air blower. Wax application with a small wax application sponge and remove with a microfibre after about 15-20 mins.

Air line, microfibre towel or anything that works for you really.

I apply the C5 with makeup pads. The other stuff I mentioned is a spray on.
You just spray on, leaving it to dry. No buffing or anything.
Simples.

If you have used C5 and then a couple of weeks later apply some form of wheel cleaner like Iron-X does it remove the C5 or reduce its effectiveness?

You can also use Fk1000p wax, however, it won't last as long as the C5 stuff.

Can the FK1000p be used as a more regular sealant and just use the C5 once or twice a year?

Sealants and stuff like Gtecniq C5 are great but I don't think they're a substitute for "little and often" just with shampoo/apc or a very mild wheel cleaner and some good brushes - get the right tools and doing the job isn't such a chore.

It should be used every month to six weeks depending upon how far you have driven, how dirty the roads are and how frequently you wash your car.
