I'm fixing a 1"x2" problem on the edge of the hardtop, I have already put some filler in, sanded it, then a few coats of primer and wet sanded it to a very smooth finish
But now that I am putting the paint coats, using rattle can colour coded to the PRD red, I can see some orange peel in the paint surface

I am doing very thinly sprayed coat, currently at 4 coats

My question is, do I wet sand it now (2000 grit ?, or maybe just some rubbing compound ?), give it a few more coats and wet sand again then give it the clear coat (then wet sand again), or do I give it a few more coats, then clear coats 3-4 times and then wet sand ?

Any advise ?

As a fellow DIY paint fixer kinda guy as far as I understand (and quite logically so at least to me) you shouldn't sand the colour layers at all as any scratches and discolouration will just be then trapped under the clear coat. Not only that but some paints will become a different shade of their colour depending on how many layers are applied, ofcourse if you were to remove layers that would dis colour part of it.

All you want to do now is apply some layers of clear, going in with a number of thick layers (be careful for runs of course) and once dry/set fix any orange peel with high grade wet sand paper (1000-2000 grit) and then compound/polish it to bring out the shine after the wet sand
