how often to wax
Discussion
Ok, after wash & dry etc. polished using Poorboys black hole (one application), then a coat of Collinite 845 insulator wax. Question is how often should I apply more wax. Is it normal to wax after each wash and also can I apply the poor boys black hole after washing or do I have to make sure all the wax is removed first (if so how many washes would that normally take).Thanks.

Collinite say 845 ought to last 5 - 7 months under normal conditions. It sounds like what you want is a quck detailer to use at the end of each wash to maintain maximum shine. If so head over to the detailingworld site, they'll have the answer .
Thanks for that, I'll have a look there later. Would it still be ok to build up layers of the wax ? This isn't a car that is used daily and doesn't get dirty too often so just wondered if building coats of wax to get deep shine is ok. layering wax is fine, despite some people putting many layers down anything more than 3 or 4 appears to be a waste of time according to various sources.
If you've already done one coat of wax, I'd do another now as a second coat helps to ensure the car is properly covered, then as others have said use a QD after washes, depending on how much the car is used/what weather is sees you could put another coat on in anywhere between 3 to 6 months to keep it going.
On the QD side, as someone said Sonax BSD (Brilliant Shine Detailer) gets lots of good reviews, its cheap too, you can get it from euro car parts for £6 or so. Look for discount vouchers online.

I use autoglym aquawax after every wash or a QD if I get a bit of dust off. I can honestly say after doing this last night the paintwork still feels like glass.
I could do with another coat soon though, but I think after every wash is a bit much! There are some really good products which will give great results and be quicker.

Depending on the level of preperation and what not wax can last a hugely differing amount of time and this also depends on what wax you use.
If you properly decontaminate your car, clay, polish and IPA or Panel wipe you can expect 1-2 months from most generic waxes at most.
Collinite 476s, FK1000p, Autoglym EGP or HD Wax, will net you between 2 and 4, this is all real world based on a car driven often, washed once a week with PH neutral shampoo and no top up products used.
Obviously if you use top up products the "wax" (beading/hydrophobic) effect will be a lot longer.
As long as your car is clean and there are no bits of dirt/dried wax in your applicator you are fine to wax as often as you want.
Personally I wouldn't wax more than every 6 weeks to 2 months because it's a lot of effort lol.
If you have a ceramic coating on your car such as Gtechniq C1 or Carpro Cquartz/UK/Finest then you should not need to wax your car for at least a year, usually 18 months. Although again preperation is key.
I Cquarzed my car but then had to drive it home 40 miles in the pissing rain.
Cquartz dictates 1hour "dry time" then top with Reload to protect the coating against water marks which is what I did. Although for me that didn't work out very well as I got about 5 months before the beading dropped off although a wash with Carpros Reset shampoo brought it back so I'll see how it goes.
This goes against my last car which I cquarzed and was left to cure overnight and also had a couple of hours under heat lamps and was still beading after 14 months but after which I sold it.

Depends on the wax really.
I used Collinite 476 or 845 on my daily cars, two coats of that should last 6 months easily. If you then use something like Gyeon Wetcoat for an easy protection top up every few washes the wax coating will easily last that long.
Really no point waxing after every wash as you'll only end up removing the wax you applied as it doesn't simply build up and up in layers until you have 50 layers on the car.
