Wet sanding will take of the majority of the yellow you've probably got, should then leave a uniform frosted effect on them.
That's the bit you then have to polish out, the lacquer is a bit of a cheat as it fills in the fine scratches instead of going at them more harshly with polish. Same effect either way.
If I can do it (and I'm cr*p at these kinds of things) you can mate.
