I've got a lovely Mk 5 Golf GTI, the trouble is someone keyed it down both sides. I've been quoted about £1500 to respray both sides which'd have it looking good as new but its not covered by insurance frown.

I'm also thinking of selling it and don't think i would recoup this in the sale price. It'd probably be worth £6k + it's painted as it has relatively low miles.

My question is how much should the scratches be reflected in the price I ask for it?

Or - any ideas how I can get it fixed up for less than 1.5k?

Unfortunately I'd be inclined to knock the cost of repairs off the price of the car. Potentially a buyer may try and knock off more, many people have no idea how much it would cost.

May be worth getting it done and selling it as a mint example. Not very helpful I'm afraid mate.

Why is it not covered by insurance?

Painting both sides of the car to a high standard is going to cost a lot of money.

Got any pictures of the damage? If the damage isn't too deep someone might manage to save it before painting.

As for selling it, few people will want to buy a car with serious issues. If they were paying to have it repaired they'd want a discount for the repair plus a discount for the inconvenience.

You could only hope someone who could do the repair themselves might not be as harsh with the price.

All you should need is an incident number, which shouldn't be a problem, providing its one claim.

Oh and the car is actually insured fully comp. wink

I bought a 205 GTi for £250 which had been keyed on both doors, boot and bonnet and dented on rear quarter would have been worth about £1500 otherwise.

I bought 2 used doors, a boot and a bonnet for under £100 in the right colour and lived with the dent in the quarter.

Unless your selling it very cheap I can't see people even bothering to look at it as there's plenty of golf GTI's on the market.
