First off yipeeeee we have our 190 visas!

Secondly what are the thoughts on getting a job from the UK?
I'd like to get a job from here in the UK then work my 2 weeks notice and head over but I've been advised it's much easier to get a job once you’re in the country?

I'm a mechanical technician by trade in the oil industry but currently on a 6 month placement quoting manufacturing hours for new business if anyone knows any contacts! smile

Yes its hard to get a job from the UK. If I had not moved with my company I would probably have booked a date to fly over anyway and tried very hard to do what I could from the UK. If that didn't work out then I'v tried but I am not putting the move off because of it. Arrive then renew the search.

the biggest issue would be where you base yourself for the work you do.

I held email communications and even a couple of Skype calls with recruiters whilst still in the UK prior to moving over and although promising, all of them concluded with "come in and see us formally once you've arrived and settled". But, my industry is fairly competitive and I was on a restricted 417 visa at the time. It can't hurt to do some googling and send a few targeted emails stating your position.

My advice would be: get your CV (or Resume as you'll now have to call it) up to scratch, obtains hard copies of work references, research the recruitment agencies for your field in the area you're moving to, ensure you have some smart interview clothes and bring a bundle of cash to tide you over whilst looking for work.

I'm an engineering manager and found a job from the UK some 3 months before leaving the UK!

The original plan was to find something when we arrived, having got a 176 skilled migrant Visa I could have worked in a supermarket if I wanted. So we booked our flights for September 1st and a few months before that I started looking for a job from the UK. None of the recruitment companies were interested and many wouldnt even give me the time of day. However, where I found the best response was with small businesses - Those who had a badly made website that was tricky to find.

I had my first Skype interview with a crane manufacturer who said they really wanted someone sooner and asked if we could move in August - I said that would be difficult so they said they'd like to see me for a second interview when I arrived. I was pleased with that and assumed thats the way it would go upon arrival.

A couple of weeks later, still sat in my PJs in the in-laws house in the UK I had exhausted all Google searches for engineering related phrases and companies. However, as part of my search I'd started a Google map and noticed all the potential employers were in little clusters so I started using Street View to take a virtual tour of all the industrial estates.

At each building I'd Google the company name as shown on the building or sign outside - This yielded another 2 Skype interviews, one of which became the job I'm in today.

By the end of July I'd had two interviews by Skype and a few phone calls to my new boss before contracts were exchanged and signed. He even came to collect us from the airport and allowed us to use a company vehicle until we bought our own.

All the pieces fell into place and it removed the two worries we had about moving here - Getting a car ASAP and finding a suitable job.

That turned out to be a sign of things to come - Since then we've never looked back and life here has been a thousand times what it was for us in the UK. To say we're having a great time is an understatement.

Good point about the smart clothes Yardman, I'll squeeze them in the case.

Still hopeful my current company come up with something but been in touch with a few agencies, they've not been much use so far!

Flights booked its getting real!

I was offered a job whilst in the UK. Applied in November, there was a 2 hour skype interview in Dec and we're off to Perth tomorrow. This is in government funded IT around scientific research. My 457 visa took less than a week to get sorted.

I'd never thought of living in Perth before I saw the job advertised on a UK job board. I'm currently sat in London part excited and part stting myself biggrin

Well, I was half a point short on the reading section of my IELTS, I got 9 for writing, 9 for speaking, 8.5 for listening and feckin 7.5 for reading, half a point short of the required 8 for each across the board!!

Problem is by the time I now re-sit it and get the EOI and visa app in I'll be 45 and lose another 15 points for age.

So I'd kind of given up...........

However, got a Skype interview lined up this Sunday night for a job in Wellington, NZ and my mate in Perth has just sent me a text today saying a job has come up that my name has been put too and my CV has gone over, so fingers crossed that we may still end up in Perth soon on a sponsored visa...................

Yeah right pain!

Hopefully something will come of this lead from my mate, otherwise fallback is likely to be New Zealand.

If it's Perth, I wouldn't hold your breath.

I got a call 26 months after an interview, asking if I was still interested in the job.

LOL, I had good feedback on the interview yesterday, will have a definitive answer by Tuesday latest. This is a company a mate started with last year when he moved out, I had an informal interview in person with them when I came over last May, subsequently a job has come up that hasn't been advertised and my CV was put forward and they had discussed me and then called me for this second Skype interview.

So hopefully you'll have a new PH member in Perth soon!!!
