Back to more hum-drum things, I'm trying to work out what family chariot would be good/we can afford when we get home. I'm torn between <£2k beater or >£4k keeper, but for some reason I can't take my eyes off of 2.5 Legacys - even the outbacks. WTF is wrong with me? I think some Aussie must have rubbed off on me.... Ideally, I'd love a 3.0 Spec B Estate, but fk paying £500 a year in tax.
I'm quoting this cos that Escort looks just brilliant. Want.

As for the Liberty love, I get it - the PB Family Truckster...

Not sure I get the Moke love thang, but if it has to be a Mini, and you're off to QLD to get it, then add a few more pennies, and get this one...

http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Leyland-...

Could be a proper giggle
When I spoke to the vendor he reckoned it was IRO 110bhp, along with many more positive comments. With that weight, and having no body, it would be such a blast. I'm surprised at the lack of Moke love actually.

Anyway, looks like I can be true to my word and my housemate is likely to buy it.

Anyone know what the go is with 'permits' to drive unregistered cars interstate? I didn't think would be acceptable?

Subarus just wear their heart on their sleeve. No smoke and mirrors, just reliable, practical transport. Which makes them sound dull... and they can be... but then one wintery evening they pull you up a sleet covered hill or out of a bend you went into about 20% too hot, and it feels like the car actually cares about you.

Then they do a head gasket.
You had me at...head gasket....

Yep, on paper it all stacks up - low weight, high-output, low-capacity engine, simple running gear, minimal bodywork. I've just never gelled well with Minis and Mini-based stuff for longer than about 10 mins.

And they won't tolerate the clutch being changed by chimps.

However for me, in the case of the Gen 4 Lib, its the combination of low-key exterior, proven and reliable mechanicals, well-finished cabin, and a sense of everything having been thought through and well-built. They lack the last notch or two of driver involvement, but are still generally a good punt along an entertaining road.

I once had to get from Shute Harbor to Bowen & back.

The only thing available to hire was a Moke. It is only a bit over 80 kilometers each way, but even before I got to Bowen I knew I should have cancelled.

I think you only need a permit from the state you bought it in. I'm basing that on a quick look at the Vicroads' website:

Driving interstate with a UVP

You can drive interstate with a UVP if this condition is specified on your permit.

You do not need a permit from VicRoads if your journey starts interstate and finishes in Victoria. Check with your local vehicle registration authority if you need an interstate permit before you drive.

I've bought 2 cars unregistered interstate. Seller gets permit. Sets times etc you can drive. Away you go.

But would you drive in interstate? Surely transport makes more sense?

I really dislike the big passenger grab handle in the centre console and puts me off the car big time. Plus it would need to be an R for me.

I haven't seen one of these in the flesh, but that interior is a bit of a let down. Does it look as bad in reality?

Carpet looks very low quality, door trims look very plastic, some of the finishing on the leather wrap bits looks a bit off, the section to the right of the steering wheel that doesn't line up with the rest of the dash would annoy me, the leather on the seats looks a bit grainy for my liking, and the boot trim/carpet looks really, really cheap.

Still, cheap to build means nice big profits for Jaaaaaag.

Haha, no don't worry about the boot trim, it's not so bad and if you drive one you won't be thinking about it.
The seat leather is nappa so all good.
What is a let down and the new FFRR has the same issue, is the paddle shifters are a cheap and nasty feeling plastic. That does annoy!!
In the USA there's aluminum ones for sale aftermarket (that didn't take long!) so you'd need to invest in that. Secondly the centre screen (controlling, phone, nav and stereo ) feels really Fisher Price, again it's the same as my RR.
There's a new infotainment coming next year too, it's going to integrate with phones and allow aps on it such as weather radar etc... so the old set up will annoy me once that's released.

Regarding the V6S vs the V8R.... Having driven them both, the R is in no way worth $50k more! Maybe $10k but that's about it. Not that the v8 isn't great, it is, but the v6 is just outstanding! The sound is awesome too!

Oh my that Jag is fabulous. Thats an awesome daily driver. I saw a 'boggo' silver one in an underground car park recently and it was the first time in a long time i've stopped and had a look round a car - stunning. Good choice.

However the weekend car has to be WN's Escort - sublime.

Strangely alluring. For hacking up and down the freeway every day it must be a pretty pleasant place to be.

A mate had one in Dubai. The engine is a Yamaha and a peach, drive is dull, seats amazing, stereo good; perfect for the Dubai - Abu Dhabi - Dubai commute he had it for.

I think the F type interior is essentially borrowed from the new Corvette hence it looks a bit underwhelming.
