I get asked 'why did you move to Australia?' a fair bit. It's not a question of 'why?' but 'why not?'

Do it.
I'd modify that slightly, there's lots of valid reasons why not but if you fancy trying it and can then 'why not' applies. Wherever you go in the world it's a compromise, nowhere is perfect. There's lots of things to like about Australia but equally there's lots you might not like. Being a 24 hour flight from your family being the big one for many, but there are plenty of others discussed elsewhere.

But for me the main thing is if you want to try something then try it, don't get to your older years thinking 'if only'.

Sounds like a no brainer to me! What do you do for a living?

I'm curious as to why UKIP scare you when you're opposed to the PC/nanny-state imposed on us by LibLabCon and the EU though... UKIP are a (slightly) right of centre libertarian party in favour of smaller government and national sovereignty, not alarming in my book.

Which is ironic when one considers how "racist" Australia is if judged to the same standard as UKIP perpetually are here in the UK.

That's likely to be a 417 which allows you to work for one employer for 6 months, not 3.
Just checked, you're quite correct, it is a 417 and does allow me 6 months with a single employer and even 4 months studying. Ultimately I'm looking to burn my suit, don some dungarees and become a cattle hoarder. We will see...

When its 53 degrees in some dusty stty outback bush field you'll be wishing you were in an air-con'd office, fiddling on PH staring at the hot 19 yr old office girl with her rack hanging out. Oh and earning twice as much laugh

Well if you do worthy things in the middle of nowhere for at least 3 months you can extend your stay for another 12 months. (I'm thinking of going on Mastermind with specialist subject being Australian Visas!)

The grass isn't always greener you're right. But reality over salary (providing you've got enough to live on) any day. I'm very fortunate in that I've a property here owned outright and that will provide some top up funds.

What about the 19 year old stable / hostel birds. A girl in the bush and all that...

Quite often a bit rough, but no particular shortage.

I spent my time over there driving tractors, as was my trade in the UK. Seemed to be quite popular among the backpackers when most guys were picking fruit and I was at the wheel of a tractor. Bit odd really, in the UK nobody gave you much notice!

EDIT: With the UK weather as it is, Im thinking about going back! Could do with 2 more years in this job just to learn a bit more and be able to take a profession abroad. Got til my 31st b'day to get in the country so no rush at the moment.

Great posts.
Come on over.
You can always just get a plane back sometime if you're not happy.

But, as one who has always lived here, be aware that we have more than our fair share of whingers/right-left wingers/know-alls/those who want to argue/those who don't care etc etc- just like everywhere else. The rest of us are probably OK, and certainly we like the sunshine, doing stuff, sport, mainly work to live, don't like people who are 'up themselves', but aren't nearly as independent and free-thinking as we think we are. Quite conservative really, and the subject of lots of social engineering by our various governments- smoking/drinking campaigns/very tough driving laws relentlessly policed/endless laws/reg's by our 3 levels of government etc etc (all very worthy of course).

But, we can jump in a vehicle and clear out and still find a camp site where there is no-one else on the horizon- and that's not easy in the developed world.
So, just make the booking, and good luck with the rules re the visa-
p.s. and read Sterling Hayden (an old bloke who knew a thing or two about whether to take the safe and easy course in life, or strike out and really live).
Best wishes.
