My wife has, until recently, had a Vodafone pre-pay SIM that allowed her to call the UK for $1 per hour as long as she topped up by $20 per month. This was an obvious bargain for us but seemingly not so great for Vodafone who have now dropped the deal in favour of a significantly more expensive arrangement that means its now cheaper to get a contract.

She's also in need of a new phone as her 7 year old Sony Ericsson is rather tired which swings it further in favour of the contract options.

In the apparent absence of a comparison website, I was hoping the PH members could share their thoughts ont he best was to get cheap phone calls to the UK?

We've tried 2 VOIP providers and the call quality is terrible. Skype is OK but the in-laws back in england prefer a good old fashioned phone call.

Hi mate

We use freecall.com

It's a VoIP based in Europe so calls to UK don't get the delay. Quality relies on Internet connection but has great mobile apps.

We pay 10 Euro for 90 days free calls to landlines. It cuts off in an hour but just redial. It also has some fair usage policy but our usage is no where near that.

At the end of 90 days the rates are 0.02 Euro per min to landlines which I think is ok.

At the end of 90 days you can add another 10Euros and you get another 90 days free call before you use your credit up.

We've been using it for 9 years but will be interested in what else folk have found.

Our internet connection at home isnt that great and skype/VOIP quality is variable at best. How much data does VOIP use if we were to use 4G? That may be a better option.

My partners parents don't do Skype etc so stuck with phone cards.

We use the Aussie Phone Card. 0.020 cents per minute plus cost of a local call to call the UK.

Makes me so angry this - my mums in the UK is 67, I grew up with computers, she has an iPhone, an iPad and a laptop.

Will she Skype.

Will she FaceTime.

Will she email

Will she text.

Will she Fock

'Why can't we speak on the phone?'

'Because I don't have a landline and phone card call quality is usually rubbish'

'Oh but just get a landline'

Jeez, yeah I'd love to spend $50 a month plus call costs to speak for 30 minutes every 3 months.

Would be cheaper for people to buy their relatives an older iPhone and just FaceTime/Skype than do phone calls. Better as well.

Well in the end my wife upgraded to an iphone on pre-pay and has used Viber to call her parents a couple of times. Call quality has been excellent and costs just over $1 an hour.

Shes happy as a pig in poo with the phone and wonders how she ever managed without a smart phone - welcome to the 21st century haha!

I use a Skype business account, I love it, $10 per month , unlimited calls to any landline pretty well anywhere in the world, I use regularly especially when overseas to call from wherever I am to ring he office on its landline.
otherwise can do off a standard Skype call out account.
