You have to apply for vehicle import approval. You need this prior to it shipping, or once in Oz, they'll take a very dim view if it gets that far.

V5, proof of purchase etc... I believe you can have one personal import per person for up to 6 months once arriving or similar??
The missus drove the Caterham and I drove a luton van to Southampton docks, where we unloaded all items ready for them to put them in a 20' container. This happened late October and we got the car and the belongings delivered to us in Coffs Harbour mid January.

My car was then registered in Queensland (Brisbane) as a personal import and it received its new VIN number, but it was then shipped down to me for the compliance and blue slip.

Very nice car. But....
Before you bring it out I'd suggest you check to see if the mods are legal here - it will need to have a compliance plate fitted when it gets here and they'll not do it if it isn't legal. For example, it looks to me like it could be too low. You don't want to get it here and then find out you need to fit the original suspension to get it legal because unless you've brought it with you finding some here could be a) difficult and b) expensive.
ETA check here https://www.ppq.com.au/ looks as if your current number is available in Qld, so you could even keep the "same" plate if you want.

Yes the mods have been bothering me, the suspension I can raise and remove the splitter, i have to fit a 200 cell cat, the engine is forged and a big intercooler and air filter, also porky 993 brakes, all legal and roadworthy here but hard to get definitive answers. But....

According to the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification on the last link (click the pdf links):
Suspension will be a no go unless it has more than 100mm clearance:
All other motor vehicles with more than 3 wheels must have a ground clearance of:
- at least 100mm at any point within 1 metre of an axle; and
- at least one-thirtieth of the distance between the centres of adjacent axles at the
midpoint between them (refer Figure LS1); and
- at any other point — at least the distance that allows the vehicle to pass over a peak in
the road with a gradient on either side of 1:15, if the wheels of 1 axle of the vehicle are
on the slope on one side of the peak and the wheels of the next axle are on the slope
on the other side.
and the brakes will require a mod plate. Of course, they might not notice unless they say Porsche on them, in which case I wouldn't chance it
1.2 MODIFICATIONS REQUIRING CERTIFICATION UNDER LG CODES
The following modifications may be performed under LG Codes:
- Fitting disc or drum brakes that are not a manufacturer’s option;
- Substituting brake master cylinders, wheel cylinders or calipers;
- Fitting or modifying brake balance and pressure limiting devices; and
- Relocating the brake pedal position for left hand or right hand drive.
The principal design installation and fabrication requirements for all of the above modifications
are contained in sub-section 2 General Requirements.

No problem - would hate for you to get here and then find out you couldn't get the car registered.To be honest it is a bit weird here. I don't know if Qld has annual RWC or not - Vic doesn't (only needed to transfer ownership) so I see cars every day that are clearly not meeting the regs but they are in daily use. Plod don't seem to care and it appears they only defect a car if they stop it for something else. What does happen though is there are a lot for sale with mods where the owner "doesn't have time to get a RWC".
Basically, if there is no annual RWC then you get the car compliance, roadworthied, registered, then you take it home and do all the mods anyway!
You can get most intelligent modifications approved by a competent compliance approved engineer. We have companies who specialise in compliance inspection & approval of imports, mostly rice burners or older US stuff, especially Mustangs.
Try the net, or Volvo lovers, to find one.
I have a Triumph TR8 which has a Range Rover 4.6, extensively modified, & controlled by an aftermarket computer.
It has a ZF transmission from a BMW & a complete rear axle from a Nissan Skyline, with a Holden LSD fitted.
Brakes are Volvo Master & booster, with Holden Monaro discs & callipers up front & Nissan rear discs & callipers.
It has heavy anti roll bars, & adjustable shocks, coil over in the rear, with modified radius rods & a watts linkage.
This is in Queensland, & everything is approved, & compliance plates fitted. The only thing I wanted, but could not get approved was a hydraulic hand brake.
I gave the car to the compliance company, they inspected it, fitted compliance plates, got it registered, which includes third party insurance, & fitted registration plates. They gave it back to me a day later legal & registered for 6 months for $1000. Registration of a V8 in Queensland is just under $1000 PA, so not a silly price I thought.
Some engineers will approve things that others will not. Make enquiries with the Brisbane Volvo enthusiasts about the right people. Unfortunately the people I used have left the area, & I have been unable to find them, but there are plenty of good competent people who will approve & compliance well engineered modifications that are not silly.
There is no annual inspection in Queensland. Inspection is only required if you bring a car from overseas or from another state, or for transfer of ownership.
