I'm in the process of moving to Melbourne, we will arrive late July this year. Does anyone have any advice like Facebook groups or other online forums for Brits moving to OZ?

We are hoping to possible pick up some cheap furniture from other people moving overseas, and meet some other locals.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Good luck with the move, I thought Melbourne was one of, if not the best city in the world!
Pomsinoz is a good website.

We used Pom's in Oz a fair bit when we came over, and the missus still keeps an eye on the forums.

PH has an Australian subsection, so that can be of use to you.

When you arrive, Gumtree is big here, so get cracking on that.

Great thanks all, Ive now registered on the above site and it's full or exactly the stuff I'm after. Hadn't realised PH had a Aus subsection so will keep an eye on that also.

Go and see Ramsey Street on the Neighbours tour! It's tiny compared to what you see on tv and you're pretty much guaranteed to meet Libby Kennedy (who seems to hang around the tour group's office every day...)

Where are you thinking of living?

Post your chosen suburbs on here and those of us that know the place can advise if it is wise choice or not.

Good Idea, I hear Sunshine, Frankston and Craigieburn are nice! wink

In all seriousness, this isn't a bad little list although I apparently only live in the 34th best suburb. Why did I ever move from South Yarra??

You could have been on The Block if you had stayed.

Erm, I was on the advert for the Block Glasshouse open for inspection as I was in the audience standing behind Scotty as they filmed the intro, plus the Block hexagon building is in my old road in South Yarra.

Don't watch it though, boring as anything like most Aussie TV!

That list isn't bad, but is heavily skewed by purchase price affordability. Moving to Australia and Melbourne specifically, for me, was a lifestyle choice - Having commuted 1.5 hours each way to London for 8 years I wanted a big change.

That meant ruling out areas that were less than 20 minutes from the CBD - Now having spent 5 years in Port Melbourne/South Melbourne and Albert Park I am very happy with my choice.

Yes the city's beach is "crap" as compared to the other Australian offerings, however it's a damn sight nicer than 99.9% of the UK's and it is literally on my doorstep.

South Yarra, Parahan, Middle Park are also all great in my book...excellent access to the GP track too smile - I would avoid Northcote, Carlton, Fitzroy, (the north) - Imagine Shoreditch with 40 degree heat in the Summer... sweaty hipsters sitting on milk crates straining craft beer through their handlebar moustaches.

Let's be honest though, it is a first world problem deciding where to live in the most liveable city in the world. cloud9

I did the opposite: 10 years in Swindon with a 15 minute commute and now 8 years here with an hour long commute to Port Melbourne.

But as you say, it was a lifestyle choice.

Give it a least a couple of years before deciding to stay or not.

It takes a while to get used to the (in general) great lifestyle and the stick you'll get for being a 'pomme' at every England Vs Australia sporting event anywhere in the world.

Good luck with the move. I miss Brisbane now we're in New Zealand.
