A couple of times recently I have noticed restaurants / pubs “charging” £1 per person for tap water for the table which then goes to charity. When did this practice start?

Is it even legal as I thought places that served alcohol had to serve free water? Or is it a ruse to make a few £££ either through not giving it to charity (I’m sure they aren’t dishonest) or through the % in the tip? Or is it another “stealth tax” that charities seem to be using now?

Pubs/restos are obliged to supply tap water FOC if it is asked for. I am sure that if challenged over their £1 "donation" they would give the water FOC. It's only an extension of Ryanair passing round the "charidee" hat on flights. Frankly if I'm going to hand over some of my hard-earned to a charity then I'll take the credit, thank you, not that c**t O'Leary.

They only have to give free water if they are licensed
