New to this section of the forum - hello wavey

So I emigrated to Sydney a few weeks ago and I'm thinking a car could be a great addition to enjoying the lifestyle here smile

I'm thinking something like a Jeep Wrangler TJ as they seem quite affordable for what you get!

I am struggling a bit to get my head round car ownership requirements compared to the UK - does anyone know where there's a good guide?

I understand there's the Rego, CTP, Tax, Stamp Duty and optional insurance. Where I'm a bit confused is, if I buy a car with say 6 months Rego and then transfer to my name do I also then need to pay for CTP and Tax or this all included in the Rego (i.e. I'll get 6 months CTP and Tax that the previous owner paid for)?

Hi & welcome to Oz.

You gain the previous owner's registration & third party insurance with your purchase. You must get a current [new]roadworthy certificate with the purchase, which you present to transfer the registration, & I expect a form proving purchase.

You have to transfer the cars registration to your name within 14 days of purchase, & pay a transfer fee. In Qld that fee is 3% of the purchase price & probably similar in NSW.

Good luck & have fun.

OK great - thanks for confirming.

From quotes I've done online CTP seems to be coming out at approx $800 so I guess it makes sense to try and get a car with as close to 12 months Rego as possible!

Not in NSW. Rest of the advice is ok.

Thanks for the help on this.

I ended up with a Clio 172 mainly because I like them and it seemed comparatively good value/interesting compared to other cars in my price range. I also decided I didn't need a 4x4 like a Wrangler. I did look at a Jimny too but it just didn't have the power I'm used to.

So far so good - had a nice little run out to the Royal National Park at the weekend biggrin

One of the best online car communities on the interweb and a great bunch too. Fairly regular drive days and a cracking annual event.

Aus is Renaultsport's 2nd largest market in the world after France BTW. We like a hot hatch down here.

Good choice.

RNP is a good run, if a bit busy. With a lot of police.

The best roads are a bit out of Sydney. I still love the Bylong Valley Way - did it last month and just as good as I remembered it. It's been resealed on the switchbacks so it's even quicker.

The Putty road is another great drive, even with todays speed restrictions.

Just imagine how much fun the road from the Royal National park to Wollongong was in my day, when it had no speed restriction, & there was very little traffic.
