In VIC you just hand over your UK license and they give you a VIC license. Make sure you have 2 UK licenses though as Vic Roads will keep your UK license.

i didn't hand mine over, why would i do that? I just applied for mine, went to VicRoads, got me mug shot taken and 10 minutes later had my licence, simple as that! I still have my "dead sea scrolls" UK one, which i shall use should the occasion arise...

On our 1 and only freeway the maximum limit is 100kph (60mph). You would be lucky most of the time to be doing 80kph due to traffic and cretins who sit in the outside lane. Lane discipline is TOTALLY non existant.
80mph on the freeway here and you are VERY close to having your car confiscated and losing your licence under the 'hoon' laws...

Well I got busted on Saturday night on our way out. Suburban speed limit was (fairly) recently reduced from 60 to 50KPH. (approx 31mph) IO actually think this is a good thing on quiet residential roads, but they have also applied it to many arterial roads rolleyes I used to set my cruise control for 60 around town as it is too easy to find yourself over, cc on the Falcon won't let me set as slow as 50.
I was on such a road; main route through the suburb. Road at least 10M wide, one side of road is hundreds of acres of bushland, other side has houses set at least 15-20M back from the road. (eta: as is normal in Perth suburbs, NO cars are parked on the road as every house has plenty of off street parking)
I was doing 65kph (thought it was a 60 limit road) and got zapped by a patrol car going the other way. Result: $150 fine!!!
OTOH, my GF was stopped at 67 in a 50 last week, of course she got let off with a warning...

Stevie-B,

Yeah itsd a pain in the back side, got pulled over cos they were bored and ran my plates which came up with unlicenced owner................ errrr no officer I can drive, own a car, buy plates, get finance on it, blah blah with my UK licence, his reply was perhaps I should make sure. Oh well. I did, and I can.

Then a couple of months later got a speeding letter/pic for 110 in a 70km/h zone, had to sort it with a visit to Queensland Roads, still the 350 fine, but no points probably until I swap to local liscence.

And how do I get a 2nd liscence ???

Just been thinking about it some more......................

Seeing as Im here as a temporary resident, on a visa, why should I relinquish my UK licence and have one of thiers ???? Dont see why I should. When/if I get residency/citizenship, then I will.

(will have to swap then anyway, my UK one runs out feb 09 cos Im diabetic, and will probably be a pain to renew, read probably impossible, if Im here in Oz)

Mum got her first OZ license last week at 66, the only thing is it says she must wear glasses. Just went to Qld Transport and waited for test, she never had one they just handed her the license, much to all our shock. You will find if you are over here for more than 3 months the local fuz can give you REAL PROBLEMS if you dont have a license, right down to free accomodation!

OK, well I hear what your saying, perhaps I will have a further chat with QLD transport again and get something in writing. Like Ive said, if I dont technically have to, I wont, would rather enjoy seeing their faces when they find out for cetain I dont have to, especially if they've given me a hard time unjustifiably (sp??).

I was driving to Noosa from Sydney and was stopped by an oncoming unmarked police car, he claimed I was doing 156Kph, I dont believe I was but I got a ticket to pay $1550, I returned to the UK without paying it and they sent a reminder to the UK, I then emailed them to dispute the speed claimed and was told pay up or go to court.

If I choose to go to court I must appear in person, I also changed my address and notified them, I then got a letter from a cash collection service for the fine and the new occupant returned it to them saying not at this address, I have not heard anything since.

BUT what happens if I go back will they persue it??

stall it all you like but you are only increasing the cost of the fine as you will ultimately be liable for costs of them chasing you down, and they will , if it had of been a rental car it would have automatically been paid and the cost passed onto you in most cases.

You can only use a foreign licence in the UK for year, after that you must get a UK licence, works both ways.

Sure, thats fair enough, but on 2 seperate occasions, Queensland Transport has told me I dont need to get a Queensland Licence for the length of my visa, so I wont (well perhaps I will)

two bad things about this country - taxation and the cops. Its a big power trip for them. Its all too American over here, gun on their hip etc. I reckon they must be on commission or a bonus scheme....the more people you book or fine, the more you earn. Lets hear some responses from coppers who are Ph'ers.

really doub question here, but if you get a license in queens and then move to NSW or Wester for example, do you have to change your license each time?

If you move interstate you can only use a license from another state for 3 months. We've just moved over here and initially went to QLD to see the in-laws. We had such a difficult time proving ID that we went and got QLD licenses (they use them a hell of a lot for ID purposes here). Now We've moved to Melbourne we need to go and get Vic licenses (and re-register the car because it can only be driven on QLD plates for 3 months).

Mind you, I've read on Vicroads website that I don't need to get a Vic license because I'm in on a temporary resident visa and can use my UK one for the duration of the visa.

It also quite clearly states that they will give you your UK license back if you use it to get a Vic one.
