Like this one, any ideas? Is it illegal in Oz to have safety cameras marked on sat nav?

In Perth at least, I only know of a couple of tax cameras (please don't call them safety cameras!) that are fixed. By far the majority are mobile and will be randomly moved around (well not randomly, carefully chosen positions to raise the most money, where the speed limits are too low, as opposed to dangerous locations)

I think this is a loop hole that is going to be shut down pretty fast!!

In WA you can use a radar detector.

In the other states it is illegal to use one but as far as I am aware there is nothing yet to say it is illegal to have it on your sat nav.
If you scout around the interwebs you can find downloads for your sat nav with cameras marked on it.

Having said that though:

A. How will they know your sat nav has it...as far as I know there is no way the radar detector, detectors will be triggered by your sat nav?

B. unless a polic officer gets in your car and drives it how will they know?

C. How can they prove you downloaded and installed new software?

Apart from WA as stated already, radar detectors and any other active transmission device that sends out a signal to detect or interfere with police or other speed detection equipment, are 100% illegal. Certainly in Victoria and NSW the country traffic cops have VG2 detector detectors so if you do use one (I always did when living there) you have to shut it down as soon as you detect what you think is a "real source" to minimise the possibility of detection. It's a stupid game really but if they suspect you have one and you deny it, they have the right to conduct a reasonable (read up to 15 mins) search of your vehicle but not your person (stuffin it down yr pants is an obvious hiding spot - might put a smile on the typically robotic female traffic plod too!). 2 years ago (when I left) it was on the spot $1500 fine if you gave it up plus obvious confiscation of the kit. If you deny & they find one then double the fine. Laser jamming devices are 110% illegal as they actually interfere with the revenue raising process rather than just detect it - maybe heavier penalties for getting busted with one of those?

Having camera POI on yr satnav or using a road angel type device is still legal AFAIK in all states. As previously mentioned, 99% of Oz cameras are covert & mobile so they are not that much use really IMO. You still see RA & similar getting advertised in most Motoring mags in Oz. They don't detect anything, they simply rely on reported co-ordinates database. Maybe the a-holes responsible for the speed taxes in Oz are adding those to their fund raising list by now? who knows - soon all cars in Oz will be speed limited to 100 kays the way things are headin!

In most states apart from WA, a radar detector will take up to 9 demerit points from your license, you only get 12 - can't recall if it's still over 3 years or whether it's been bumped out to 5 now. I suspect a jammer will land you in serious hot water.

There's nothing that restricts the kind of POI data you can have on your mapping system, that would be even more ridiculous than speed cameras - if that law ever came in, they may as well get to the point of giving you tickets for remembering where stuff is.

I have to say the speeding laws in Perth SUCK.

I'm not saying every one should be alowed to speed every where that's just silly

What I am saying is As there is clearly a huge problem with a number of area's

One the driving standards of most road users

Two the over zelus use of camera's hidden behind the likes of bins and silly places just make these look like money makers..

Austraila well Perth as I can only comment on Perth is having a huge problem of Deaths and the camera's are not working.. Just taking money from people is underhanded and teaching nothing to the motorist other than ...the police are the enemy.

What i think should happen is like here in the uk. Get caught and you get a day of instruction with other people who have been caught. Raise the limit on the Freeway 100k's is just too low. 110 or 120 K's this means the traffic will move quicker and keep drivers more alert. too slow ( like America ) and you start woundering off.. this is a provent fact and can be backed up with evidence.

Then make urban area's a set speed say 70k's or 60. More and better sign posting Perth is terrible. To inform drivers of speeds in the different area's

The use of reminder signs these are elctronic signs that use Solar power to power them ( something Perth is not short of ) and they cost a faction of the price of a mobile unit.. This is a reminder to drivers that works.. we have all done it 100k's down the freeway and then your looking what the car in front is doing .. prob looking for his lunch ( I don't joke I have seen it hence the comment of bad driving too slow on the freeway ) and then your doing 110k's and zap!! your not a speeding driver on the whole and just for that one moment your doing over the limit and you got caught. it's not doing the police any favours and I know from coming over from the UK as an advanced Driver IAM. That the police are not well liked and the divide is getting worse.

More Education, More and better signs and increase the speed on the freeway. Slower in urban area's.

Also I have to say.... if you give a kid a loaded bomb and then looked miffed when they kill them selves when it blows up... I am talking about giving kids 5.5ltr V8 Ute as their first car.. and wounder why they crash it..

limit new drivers to 2ltr cars for 2 years and then 3ltr for a year after that.

It's such a shame this is all happening in what is a great country. The use of stat nav helps keep the driver informed and giving the driver more information is only going to help there safe journey..
making the driver spend more time looking at the speedo and for hidden camera's rather than consentrating on the road ahead is dangerous and the government are responsible for this rise in accidents. Taking the money and doing nothing but hide behind a see though arguement of " Safety Camera's "
