O/T - About to start building house - any tips?

We have bought a block of land and am about to go out, get a house design and start building through a regular building firm.

Any tips to look out for and hints?

We got the plans approved and started building the next day, only needed a case of 4x in a councellors boot, now you have to pay a fee, the beer was far cheaper. Look at all the houses you can find, take ideas from them, and look at some houses by that builder from a few years ago to see how well the wear.
