Me & missus HSV are returning to Melb after 3.5 years in Blighty. The removalists will be packing all our stuff and shipping it as groupage. I have a fair collection of alchy in my bar - some opened some not, most bought over here but a couple brought over from Oz as well. Should I try & pack it myself (unlisted on the inventory) or just let the movers pack it and face the ripoff duties with customs in Oz (145% on spirits & 50% on wine/champ/port). I have about 15 opened or new spirit bottles and about the same for wine products. Seems they charge just the same regardless of opened or not. wee getting rapidly warmer.

Any experience from the PH massive?

I think I would expect every box to be opened for quarantine purposes so I would imagine the stash would be found.

There's a bank holiday coming up, shouldn't take us too long to shift... beer

....unless you are a diplomat the normal import quantity applies. We just moved from Oz to UK using Allied Pickford with 2 bottles of spirits, not one box was opened. I don’t know if they scan or x-ray the boxes, you would think so.

yeah... when I came over from Oz I brought stloads of booze - mainly Bundy Rum and it was all packed by me and put in a 20ft crate with the car. Not a single box was opened!

taking stuff into Oz is a different story - just like when you enter the Int arrivals at any Oz airport; green or red line don't matter... everyone & everyting gets checked. Chalk & cheese compared to UK.

I seem to remember when I went UK>AUS the shipping paperwork having something along the lines of not being allowed to transport anything dangerous (similar to an aircraft...flammables, explosives, gasses), anything that would be illegal in Aus and all alchohol to be declared.

We only had half a dozen or so boxes and the info pack we had said that it would be loaded in to a container with other stuff for Aus.
It also warned that the containers and individual boxes will be x-rayed.

None of my stuff had been opened when it arrived....but we didnt pack anything we couldnt have anyway.

I assume if they had x-rayed and found something we did not decalre the box would have been opened and the offending stuff removed.

Will an open bottle of alchohol pass through quarantine anyway?

Also if it is open wouldnt that raise questions about it being tampered with and it no longer containing the original liquid?

I'd check the AQIS web site (www.aqis.gov.au) for this information, you'll be shipping your things as unacompanied goods so the paperwork will have a guideline Im sure of it.

When my things came over from UK>Aus in a 20ft container they only opened the boxes that had Kitchen or Garage written on them so the do open things... everything else was left alone.

We drank all of ours before we left as getting it in to Oz was looking like way too much trouble.

Amazing how well a nice bottle of Krug goes down whilst bubble wrapping junk and packing boxes for going in the container! smile

Could be sent here as a gift?

Do it in lots of batches spaced well apart and keep each parcel below the limit for brining alchy in?
