I hope you have as much fun as I Dirk.

They are beautiful things as you start to get under their skin, sometimes crude but very nice to work on as a relative novice. Post up some pictures and feel free to email me direct if there are any parts you're struggling to find. I've discovered that there are many parts shared with other cars and can often be found cheaper with a little digging.

Stripped down the front hubs tonight and removed the brake disks ready for dropping off at the platers tomorrow.

Also got the brake servos, master cylinders, and all 4 calipers packaged up ready for dispatch to Past Parts for full refurb, pictures to follow.

On a recent Italian holiday (what else) I saw an absolute rotter Mexico on a flatbed trailer being towed. Clearly a heart first restoration job, but at least the car appeared complete.

This is lovely car OP.

For something like a Quattro where rubber, trim, and glass can be found at reasonable cost, take the glass out for a proper job thumbup
wink

I'll not be taking the glass out then...

Cheers, the bodywork on these cars seems to be the week point so if that one's a rotter somebody's going to be handy with a welder and sheet metal smile, thankfully mine was very solid behind the panels due to it's past life in the south of Italy but there's always hope:-

Managed to steal a few hours in the garage this morning and got the rest of the brake system dismantled. 2 large servos removed from the inner wing then shifted the front brake callipers. They are as bad as the rears with knackered seals but are ripe for refurbishment. Yes, they are as huge as they look in the picture...

Great job and highly recommended thumbup

Very slow progress on the Mexico, I've been cleaning the underside which involves stripping off the thick bitumen based under seal. Horrid thick stuff but it looks to have worked as the metal is mint underneath...

Tyre are also off the wheels which are to be refurbished. Photos of the Borrani's before being sent to PJ Hallewell for a full refurbishment.

What a fantastic car and thread.
Has anyone seen the Mexico Godin Banks are selling at the moment? Looks quite tempting...

Stole another couple of hours in the garage tonight. Handbrake cable removed and boxed up to send off as a pattern for replacement and exhaust manifolds removed.

Nice to see a full compliment of brass nuts and the manifolds look solid despite surface rust.

Any suggestions on how to clean these up? Light bead blast then paint with a VHT paint or any other suggestion?

I have used Deox C by Bilt Hamber Labs successfully for derusting. Its a chemical dip. For a car like this what about a ceramic coating once its done, to keep it looking good?

I've also used Deox-c with good results, but I get the same results with Citric acid at 10% which is much cheaper off eBay. Also you could try electrolytic, and if you're considering a ceramic coat the people who apply it might offer / want / insist on doing the cleaning too.

I wasn't looking to ceramic coat the manifolds, they weren't originally and I've seen mixed results on good manifolds. Plus, the cost of good ceramic coating is halfway to covering the cost of new stainless manifolds to match the rest of the exhaust system.

These are pitted and rough and I'm really just looking to avoid the rusty-look in the future.

I'll get them dipped to de-rust them and see how they look.

Cheers

Body work is looking great mate - you said you were scraping away at the underseal but I didn't expect to see bare metal and in such good condition!

Manifolds...hmm...getting rid of the rust and back to bare metal is easy enough via blasting but what finish to apply?

As you know my Tamora manifolds are coated to reduce temps and this time round still look good but cost about £400 + VAT...(think they went to Camcoat from HHC) the Mexico's look much bigger so logically would cost more? maybe £600 or £700 at a guess?

I've used high temp paint before and never had much luck - eventually it just flakes and falls off - nothing worse that watching your nice shiny manifolds rust again!

I got my suspension shot blasted, zinc coated and powder coated - obviously the powder coat is out of the question but what about other types of finish? Would zinc stand up to the temps? Others? ...then there's the cost!

What about high temp. wrap - heard mixed views on this though?

Sorry not much help - perhaps others can recommend at good high temp paint?

Cheers

Pete

PS Great job so far!

Were you around Harrogate last weekend?

Saw a lovely old Maserati then, but wasn't sure what it was.

Lovely. Those brake callipers look the same as Aston DBS V8 too.
