My old 2 Dr Savage, It recently resurfaced in need of a rebuild (reshell) and the owner was turning down offers that make yours look a bargain!! I could never keep up with its gearbox consumption when I had it in the mid 1970's, also the understeer in the wet was a bit scarey, otherwise fantastic car.

Oh and I paid £60 and a Mk 1 Lotus Cortina to get it, Approx total cost £310 Bargain????

you only broke the gearbox, lol your not trying the first day i had mine i blew the gearbox,

then the back alxe, then the clutch !

it was off the road more than it was on. back in the 70s there where few cars that could live with
a savage not even the old bill lol but thats another story !

Cortina savage, they bring back memories! Changing Diffs by the roadside, blowing gearboxes etc. But what fun! unbelievable acceleration for their time. They were all built by jeff uren of Power unlumited. Hanwell high st . West London. Couple of years ago his son was selling loads of memorabilia from the company on e bay. As for identifying a 'real one' who knows, they had unique bits such as footrest next to clutch pedal. but as the cars were all purchased from fords then converted so i doubt any records exist for them.

Company that built The Savage run by Jeff Uren was called Race Proved.

Lukily I have copies of all the original orders, invoices and letters for this car. I believe Jeff Uren kept very good records!

Well done mate, can't wait to see it in the flesh. I'll have to dig out some piccies of my last Mk1 Capri. Must have been 1983. Wanted a yank but could not find anything in my budget that was not rotten. Ended up with a Mk1 3000 GXL that had been customised. Originally green it had been repainted white, brown vinyl, full length webasto. Slightly flared wheel arches. The interior conpletely retrimed, corbeau seats. Series 1 XJ6 wooden dash and yes it all worked. Stage 2 with triple webbers. The guy must have spent a small fortune. Bloody thing always broke down, often overheating. Turned out to be a leak on the inlet manifold gasket. So pressurised the system occasionally but no oil in water.
In fact I owned this car when I met Kerry. My first date with her I had to borrow her brothers 1.3S Fiesta. I was driving what I thought to be quite sensibly. Within a mile she said do you always drive like this. Nothing changes eh smile

Really pleased that you bought this car. Followed this thread from the start as I used to own one.

Unfortunately, mine wasn't an original Savage, but a Mk 1 with a V6 from a Zodiac in it. 2000E box, various diffs from 3.7 - 4.2 as they kept blowing (always the planetary gears, spent many hours with my arm in the differential housing scooping all the bits out)

Went to insure it at Swinton (no internet then, 1974ish) and got laughed out when I said it was a Cortina with a 3.0 litre engine. Took a while, but they eventually agreed it was a Zodiac with a Cortina body fitted. Happy days smile

Under £40.00 per year (£36 rings a bell, but a long time ago).

All the very best with the car, and if you ever do get fed up with it, may I be the first to get PM'd to make an offer?

Yes Hanwell. Just across the road from Steve at Vulcan Racing Engines.

How did Broadspeeds Bullit Capri fare against Jeff Uren's cars I wonder?

Interesting stuff on Basil Greens Perana cars: http://perana.org/index.php

All good stuff.

The Perana brings back memories! An uncle of mine took me to the 1971 F1 GP at Kyalami in his red Cortina Perana, I was all of 7 years old at the time.

I am still trying to find that bloody road test. It wasn't long ago i read it, but it isn't in the 67/8 Autocars so I can only assume it was a 2nd hand car and I read it in one of the 1970's editions. I'll keep looking from time to time though.

Er - yes and no.17/6/71 is the second hand test as shown above (and thanks for giving me the approx date - it was doing my head in)
There was no Autocar on the 13/7/67 - I have the 10th and 17th and neither feature the car. Did you mix up the years?

24th October has a full test running to five pages. Only £1,573!

Don't have 1979 copy sadly, although could have had. It was just that when i picked up all the mags the car was on its knees and I couldn't take any more. Still I have all Autocars and Motor from the mid-fifties on.

Have dug through some very old photo albums. I know the first two are round the wrong way but if I adjust them the quality goes. Note socket set, back then I could actually fix my own cars.

Cannot believe I never took any of the XJ6 dash. You can probably make out the centre console with the electric window switches in it. Also came with a Janspeed exhaust, twin pipes each side. Appliance mags I think. Note dead locks on doors. They worked. A few times I came back to the car and the door catches were open. Thankfully never damaged.

p.s. Kerry sitting on the bonnet of a Series 3 4.2 which I bought from a very good friends father. I also had his Series 2 prior
