ROSPA have published reprints of some smashing posters from 1950's onwards. I particularly like the road safety ones.

My dad broke both his collar bones as a cyclist in that situation. It's a nasty accident.

Note how the cyclist is wearing a finely pressed suit. I expect the pipe has already fallen from his mouth. People knew how to behave in those days!

Ahh, reminds me of when I was repairing tellys in the 70's in the sleepy town of Tenterden. There was an old wisened customer who used to ride his bike everywhere. Hadn't seen him for a month or two, then when I did I asked him where he had been. Well, he replied, you know how everyone opens their car doors around here without looking? Some idiot did that while I was riding past, so I stuck my leg out straight and kicked the door off! Busted my leg, but it was worth it. Great old fella.

Guy opened the door of his old Jag (MkII I think) on me about 1974. My wheel ripped half his door panel off and I can still remember looking up and thinking "this is going to hurt" as my head hit the window, which smashed! I was right though - it DID hurt!
