Hillman Hunter GLS
Discussion
I'm sure I saw that Hunter GL on E-Bay recently... I was tempted, very tempted.
I just missed on on the, IMO, holy-grail of Hunters... the non Hunter Hillman GT, which appeared on E-Bay a few weeks back. It's 1 of 2 left in the UK, I beleive. Up until then I thought there was only 1 !!
My dad had an H plate GT back in the day. It was only recently I realised that it wasn't badged as a Hunter. It was actually based on the poverty-spec Minx.

25k?! What does he think it is, a Mk1 RS2000? I had one many moons ago when the Xr3i came out. Think it was HAC 260N, a gold car. I ended up selling it when the front wing split away from the suspension tower and I've regretted that ever since. Back then I didn't have a garage let alone the ablity to repair it. I liked the overdrive gearbox.
I had a blue HLS.
Driven hard petrol managed to escape from the carbs and end upin the brake servo, causing the diaphragm to split and lose assistance. Learned to change the diaphragm quite rapidly.
The drivers door top hinge pulled out of the shell thanks to rust and a windy day. 4 years old.
Finally, a front brake disk shattered under hard braking, got tangled in the wheel an locked it , so slid into a ditch, and the front end pointed in a strange direction.
The design lived on in Iran as the Paykan until 2005. Rust wasn't an issue there...

Don’t forget you don’t need to go full-on Holbay.
Back in 68 Rootes dealer Davenport Vernon produced the “Master Hunter” - they added a second Stromberg, a decent exhaust manifold, a brake servo, Minilites and a few other bits. So you would have a car that dismissed the 0-60 dash in 12 seconds and be the envy of your neighbours.
Joking apart it was probably a very capable car and it would be relatively easy to build a replica.

25k?! What does he think it is, a Mk1 RS2000? Back when a good Mk.1 RS2000 could be had for 25k......you'd have got this Hunter GLS for about 7-8k.....
Now those good Mk.1 RS2000's are north of 40k........its also dragged other types up with it.
On rarity alone, a good (and this does look very good in photos) GLS should be worth a reasonable amount.....just because there are so few left.
The owner has had a stab in the dark at a price.........whether someone will bite or not is another matter.

Didn't the Humber Sceptre version have the twin Strombergs and overdrive? Lovely interior too.
Sure did, unfortunately I don't have any pics of mine when I owned it.First one got turned into a rally car......out came all the 'lovely' interior, out came the 2xStromberg engine, and in went a Holbay GLS/H120 engine, and horror of horrors, he grafted on a set of Escort Grp 4 arches
Well it was 1978......
He later bought another Sceptre that he kept standard as his daily driver when he got fed up with getting in and out through the cage in his work suit etc

Don't forget that Martin Kent raced a 5.7 Chevy powered Rapier in British Supersaloons during the 1970's.First one got turned into a rally car......out came all the 'lovely' interior, out came the 2xStromberg engine, and in went a Holbay GLS/H120 engine, and horror of horrors, he grafted on a set of Escort Grp 4 arches

The car was built from the remains of a Gordon Keeble that he had totalled - I remember watching the Rapier race and it was seriously quick...
