"Classic Car Rescue" Channel 5 on Mon 24th Sep 20:00
Discussion
To clarify, I have written to Channel 5 asking them to explain why three of the programme's cars, the Mustang, Porsche and Cadillac, have all appeared on Ebay selling under the name of Monowara1969 and were not purchased by those who called in, as promised. It is of interest to note that the sale of both the Mustang and Porsche were ended before time by the seller so weren't in the end sold through Ebay. According to their automatic reply, I should receive their answer within 14 days. We'll see later.
Same seller?

No feedback left though. Either they went un-won; sorry I mean unsold or sold outside of eBay.
If the cars were not given away then it is a blatant misrepresentation that could get Channel Five is deep. As it was a phone in lottery I'm sure there is some small print loop hole. "Yeah I won the car but I'd prefer cash as it's a fackin' death trap" springs to mind.
As it isn't a product for sale it goes beyond the Trading Standards Office remit so you'd have to write or email Offcom instead and possibly make a formal complaint to BT or if you voted by text your network provider as ultimately it is them who passed the money on to Channel Five.
I think I read somewhere they received in excess of a million calls and texts far exceeding the value of the prizes and production costs. I've got some friends looking into it.

Would you accept cash from Bernie & Mario?"Marwio you plonkah, these fivahs've got Barbara Windsor on them! It should be Betty Windsor! And the backside should have Jane Austen, not Steve Austin! And we use pahnds in Bwitain, not dollahs!"
I have contacted my daughter, who has worked for the Torygraph for years, to ask if they would be interested. I thought about the Sunday Sport, but decided that probably Bernie would have put the cars on the moon to hide them, so I'll rest with the real world.
ETA: had a reply from Monowara on Ebay and it is succinct. "Sorry, too long a story". So we are no further forward. I would suggest you look at his selling history which perhaps seems to mostly involve porn, with lots of sales of a DVD called "Flesh Gordon" for example. There seems to be nothing over £50 - except these cars which are always withdrawn from sale.

Dear monowara1969,
I see. That's a bit worrying. Why wasn't it given away? The car is what I'm looking for but I'm a bit concerned about spending money on a car that couldn't be given away. If you see what I mean. Thanks. Cledus

I have now received the reply from Channel 5 and I am pursuing the reply. For what it is worth, here it is:-

Dear Tony
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding the Classic Car Rescue competition.
All cars featured as Classic Car Rescue competition prizes were offered to the prize winners. By agreement, some of the cars were subsequently sold by the production company to a third party.
Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.
Yours sincerely

Er - "by agreement, some of the cars were sold by the production company to a third party". By whose authority, and under what mandate? I have, naturally, demanded clarification. To follow.
ETA Here is my reply to their email:-
I am at a loss to comprehend your reply. You state that the cars were sold “by agreement to a third party”. Was this with the complicit agreement of those who had, theoretically, won the cars, or was this, as has been suggested by he who has tried to sell the cars “too complicated to explain”? Something does not add up here, since I know many people who did partake and did not win, but are appalled to see the cars for sale on the open market, all being offered by one single person. I might add by a person who seems, looking at his Ebay history, to have an implicit interest in the sale of soft porn. I shall not rest until we arrive at the true answer to this history, since there is more than a whiff of fraud implicit in the whole story. The cars are de facto being sold at far less than the theoretical “professional valuer’s estimate”. Could you also expand on this too.
I await your reply with interest
Yours faithfully,

This sounds to me like they were rejected by the winnersI would assume that Channel 5 gave the competition winners a cash sum. They are not car dealers and would not want any come back on problems with the cars. The cars would then have been sold to the trade who take responsibility of the vehicle from there on.
This way the competition winners can buy the equivalent of the car they won. should they so wish and have the usual level of trade support. Channel 5 have no ongoing liability to the car & can get on with their core business. Everyone is happy - bar the Pistonheads Forum
Yes, it was a ste programme. But this wouldn't be fraud, this would be common sense.
