Talking of petrol, the petrol gauge in this car is a thing of pure comedy. The pic below indicates what the gauge shows when the tank is so full that the magic go-go-soup is glugging out onto your shoes. The needle never gets above the 3/4 bit. The reserve light usually comes on approximately ten minutes later, and it is normal to drive the length of Britain with the reserve light on.
Recent average: approx 25 mpg, mixed hoonage, motorway cruisage, and a bit of driving around in London.

The one that came out of an IE (albeit after many years of sitting, but there were fuelling problems happening whilst it was still in use that killed a fuel pump eventually). This will not move properly - it will give a false reading as the buoyancy won't overcome the friction, stopping it from making it to the "full" position
The fuel tank can get very rusty and petrol can gunk/varish up over time, especially if the car isn't being used. Its very easy to check get to (carpet up and maybe a cover, then its bolted into the top of the tank)
The gunk is annoying and eventually a problem if it starts blocking stuff. The rust can kill fuel pumps as there is only a coarse basket style filter in the tank before it, which can become blocked,

I have inherited a rust free 1600 coupe out in South Africa so volumex is what I really want
Mechanically it is pretty sound. A few very Italian electrical things to sort out. Cosmetically there is a LOT of rust to sort out, and the interior needs a fair amount of work.
TBH the rust has me in cold sweats at night, but in 6 months it is off to a mate to be restored. All the rust is being chopped out, welded, flatted, skimmed and resprayed.

If strict originality isn't a concern to you then I'd getting the seats reupholstered in leather. Lancia only stretched to vinyl on the Spyders from memory, so it wont be 'right', but it'll be better. You can also retain the original covers as they are in case you ever with to revert to original specification.

I have been out ahooning in the HPE. I am getting better at cornering in it, after some back to basics self teaching, and am resisting the lift off lairyness.
I am enjoying the gearing, which is quite different from the Spyder's. The Volumex will stay for a long time in any gear, and encourages lots of cheerful use of second to fourth. It revs up more slowly but just keeps on pulling all the way. I don't feel the same mini leap forward that I felt in the Spyder in fifth if I called for acceleration without changing down. The fifth gear on the HPE feels more cruisy, and if I want to boot it at motorway speeds it is better to drop to fourth.
The Spyder sounded better, but you can't have everything. I think that the injected version would be a good fast and smooth cruisy machine, without the slight bottom end lumpiness of the carby cars. That blue IE is still up for grabs on Carandclassic.
PS: practical classics! I saw a half decent bookcase/corner unit outside a charity shop. A tenner. Big hatchback up, luggage cover away, back seats down, in it goes.

Ive been working on my Alfasud 1.5 ti this afternoon, got it running and only one fuel leak, quickly sorted with some new rubber fuel pipe, its got K & N filters on and sounds amazing....removed all the interior to have a good look at the floor, the drivers footwell has been welded in the past to a good standard, other wise nothing, and no welding needed. (removed that awful under felt stuff which act as sound proofing but is just a big sponge IMO).Im going to red smooth hammerite it all to make sure. This is the cheapest Alfasud I have ever bought, but probably the straightest and most rust free.
Future work, new brakes all round, front seats going to trimmers to sort out split seams on bases, and then to the bodyshop for a complete glass out repaint
Due to get my sprint veloce back next week from the bodyshop where its had new door bottoms and a repair around the scuttle, picking the drivers seat up from the trimmers in the morning where it had a bolster repair. That car has a slight misfire which I need to sort and then she can be used
Fiat X1/9 1.3 which I purchased a few weeks ago has had the radiator fan sorted, then it disgraced itself by not starting (fuel pump gone down I think) however I got it towed to my man who is a panel beater who has cut out a few small areas of rust and welded new metal in, the car is also going in for a full paint and a colour change..its currently red however was originally bright green metallic...Im undecided if to return it back to green or to paint it period orange??

Poorcardealer, I'm afraid you have too many cars that I want. As I have yet to own a sud 1.5 from that list I will take that one. How cheap is cheap? my sprint veloce was 400, and my x1/9 was 150
If it were not for having too many cars I would be on that 1300 Coupe like a tramp on chips. I would burn the ghastly interior in the public square on day one and fit the tatty one from my donor car. Then I would save the car and make it super lovely, but usable, not showy.
I love almost all Alfas, but the Alfasud doesn't quite do it for me. Wedgy GTV 6, I would. X1/9, one day I must. Italy, eh? It's where cars are from.
