1970 England World Cup Squad & Their 1600E Cortina's
Discussion
Not quite World Cup, but circa 1971/2, Jimmy Neighbour the young Spurs player came to part time coach footie at my junior school. He had a 1600E, I well remember him driving past me going down Chingford Mount in it one day and used to see him regularly in it.
Was often parked outside the Wimpy bar at Chingford mount too. He dated a good pals elder Sis for a while as well.
I had a white 70 1600E, ( PKX 335H ? ) circa 1986 for a few months, lovely car, but after a string of 3 Litre Capris it was a bit lacking.

It wasn't that long ago football players had a more realistic taste in cars. At the back end of the 80's a friend used to work in the bar at Norwich city when they were up in the first division and the car park was full of the players XR3i's.
Long shot - can he recall a C registration (1985) white Capri 2.8 Turbo Technics with a cabriolet conversion?mcford,
A mate in Ipswich had a Convertible C reg turbo techics white 2.8 Capri back in the late 80's. Not sure if it's the same car, but it had red writing along the sills saying something like "Turbo Technics 2.8 Capri" iirc.
I saw it a few times, and still keep in touch with the guy who owned it. I'll ask him the reg next time I see him.
There was also a Tickford Turbo which was an ex Ipswich players car, ended up being sold to my then GF's dad.

Stumbled across this thread whilst doing some research, my Dad was England's Trainer Coach at both the 1966 & 1970 World Cup's, he was issued with one of these Cortina 1600E's, Registration No was GWC30H
As a 19 yr old at the time I managed to clock up a few thousand miles in it whilst he was away in Mexico for a few weeks! Petrol was also free via Esso as they were running the World Cup Player Coins promo at the time
Was heartbroken when the car went back, should have bought it really but he got a contract with Lancia and replaced it with Lancia Fulvia in 1971
Here is a photo of Dad with the car outside our house in Leeds in 1970

It was great when footballers were ordinary blokes. My Dad was good mates with Jack Charlton. I was born in 1970, so it's a fair bet one of those cars would have sat on our drive.
The point I am trying to make is that famous as he was, as a kid I always remember him having Cortinas, maybe a Granada.
I have worked with a few ex players of that era and a little later, we've talked about cars and only one ever had the E Type Merc SL sorts of cars. He's got a 3 year old XF now. His mate has XJs and Rover 75s and their other pal owns a Passat CC.
Players back then were so much more in touch with the fans. Sure they were well paid, company executive well paid! Not Arab prince well paid. Top of the range cars, but they were Cortinas.
When did the mega bucks come in? When did the Cortinas get swapped for Bentleys?

When SKy decided footy was more a lifestyle than a sport and decided to pay ridiculous money for the rights ... just about the time when Division 1 ended and *The Premiership* started ... some kids actually believe Sky invented the Prem ...wildcat45 said:

As a yongster, I got to meet Geoff Hurst and Peter Bonetti at a sports shop opening 4-5 months prior to the 1970 World Cup, and Geoff Hurst turned up in his Ford Zodiac MkIV.The point I am trying to make is that famous as he was, as a kid I always remember him having Cortinas, maybe a Granada.

Cant be many white 1600Es left now. Not sure but I think ermine white was only used on S2 1600Es from late 68 to late 70.
My dad had JSO 300H in Fern green for a few years when it was still nearly new.
Does anyone know where 1600Es were exported to? Yes I know it's an anorak question but am interested.

I own one of the 246, an immaculate silver fox mk1 1600e Mk2 Cortina, ie the one with the humped dash for the clocks. The radio has since been replaced with a period radio.http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/ford_cortina_...

Football was always awash with money. Take a team like Charlton. 80K people in the 30s paying say a shilling (5p) on average each home game. That's £4k gate money. Players were on £2 a week, no police bill, certainly no ground improvements, so where did all that money go? A house in London then would have cost you £500.It went into the pockets of the businessmen who owned the club. They made fortunes whilst everyone else was involved for the love of the game.
Now there's even more money, and lots of it goes to the guys who actually provide the entertainment. I've got no complaints about that. Good for them.
Going back to the 70 WC, you'd think Ford could have stretched to the Lotus model. Bloody tightwads.
