There is a lot about Football & Footballers before Page 223 when the 'E' stuff kicks in. For me though £8.99 well spent as the 1970 World Cup and eventually a 1600E were a part of my life.
I got my PAPERBACK copy through The Daily Express, £8.99

Read and enjoy.

Another World Cup Engalnd would rather forget but the 1600E remains a firm favourite and a legend.

Although he wasn't on the publicity shots in the first post, Paul Reaney, Leeds UTD and England player, had one of these Cortinas. He lived in the street that I grew up in, and as a car mad 7 year old I was more interested in his car than his football, he also had a Red Cortina GT, my dad had a Silver fox one. These Cortinas were a common sight in Garforth where a number of the Leeds squad lived in the '70s, in fact there was a party at his house and there were 4 or 5 of the world cup cars parked in the street, when the Leeds team came to the house, if only I had a smart phone then.

A teacher at my junior school had a brand new MK1 Escort Mexico in Daytona Yellow, she never taught me.

Hi,
3 of the Cars are in Kent and another in the North of England.
Cheers.

As a 19 yr old at the time I managed to clock up a few thousand miles in it whilst he was away in Mexico for a few weeks! Petrol was also free via Esso as they were running the World Cup Player Coins promo at the time
Yup. I still have 2 complete sets of those coins. One set in the red flimsy fold out holder you got free from Esso, and another set in the blue hardboard that you had to send off for.

How sad am I?

Great thread.

We were a far better team in 70 than 66. We should have met Brazil in the final. We played them earlier on and lost 1-0, but were unlucky to lose.

We were certainly a better team than W Germany who knocked us out in the quarters. Cruising 2-0 up with 20 mins to go, Sir Alf takes of Bobby Charlton to save him for the semi that we never reached. Shocking decision. I always thought Sir Alf was a vastly over rated manager. And arrogant with it.

That game we lost to the Germans on 14/6/70 was the last game we'd play in the finals for 12 yrs.

As for giving the squad 1600Es, you'd think they'd have stretched to the Lotus Cortina.
Absolutely, Bobby had Beckenbauer in his pocket up until that point and was a fit as anyone in the squad.

My fave WC of all time is 1970. I was eight. ‘Good Morning Mexico ‘ every morning with Frank Bough …

My mum had a white MkII, MTP 27G. Not sure if 1300 or 1600.

So true. Bobby Charlton going off freed up Beckenbauer, whose job it had been to track Charlton. He was then free to actually play instead of trying to stop Charlton from playing. He took control of the game and the rest is history.

When did the mega bucks come in? When did the Cortinas get swapped for Bentleys?
When SKy decided footy was more a lifestyle than a sport and decided to pay ridiculous money for the rights ... just about the time when Division 1 ended and *The Premiership* started ... some kids actually believe Sky invented the Prem ...
This isn’t limited to football in fairness. Football agents obtaining their players the “fair share” is certainly a factor. I wonder how far the wages can realistically go as 500k a week happens already.
