saw what I thought was the new Astra convertible the other day - turns out it's not called an Astra, it's a Cascada - it's 4.7 metres long
the original Astra/Kadett convert was 4m dead
In fairness I don't think it was ever intended to replace the Astra directly, it incorporates some elements from the Insignia if I remember correctly.the original Astra/Kadett convert was 4m dead

I thought the Cascada was more of an Insignia convertible. So I don't think it is an example of model bloat. But I've got an Insignia hire car at the moment and it does seem pretty big - it seems to fill the parking space outside my home almost as much as my Jaguar X300. Note, I say seems, I don't know how the dimensions actually compare but I know the Jag isn't small.
the rise of the 'city car' under the supermini reflects the growth in size of most classes of car over the past 25 years the mk5 polo was the same size and mass as the original golf - i'd be interested to put a corsa C or D up against mk 1or 2 Astras....
freelander2 is the same size as a classic rangie and has similar sized engine ( 3.2 in the FL vs 3.5 in the classic)

it's on the Astra 'Delta II' platform, not the Insignia 'Epsilon II'
Thanks for the clarification, I don't have a great deal of interest in the car so hadn't paid much attention to the technical details, but think it looks pretty good and should have an appeal as a reasonably spacious four set cabrio.Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
