Pulled up at some lights yesterday. On the right was an R129 Merc SL500, c1990 model. On the left was a new 991 Carrera C4. The sheer width of the C4 made the Merc look positively dainty - and dainty is not a word usually used for SL500s... The arse of that Porsche was massive.

Air bags, side impact protection, electric windows, soundproofing, decent stereo speakers etc. etc.
All of which is unnecessary smile
As I said, cars don't need to be that wide.

Quite so. I actually lost my 1993 500SL temporarily while it was parked on the streets of Saltburn a few weeks ago. It was hiding so effectively within a short row of Corsas, Polos and Minis that I had to cross the street to spot it.

Great photo, I saw a proper 500 on the road a few weeks ago. Even on its own, it looked tiny.
Could solve congestion/ parking problems if we drove cars that size?
was the whole thinking behind the 'kei cars' in Japan IIRC

eg.
IIRC the whole point of the Kei cars was centred around parking. In Japan you had to prove ownership of somewhere to park your car before buying one, and these cars were so small one had no need to prove you had parking for it. I drove a Cappucino once and was quite amazed by it.

yes

My old XJ40 had all of that & was narrower than some 'medium' cars.

Next time I'm up at the parents in laws to be I need to get a picture of their '57 A35 next to my Citroen C2.

Both small, cheap family cars (made almost exactly 50yrs apart). The size difference is astronomical!

Its been on chocks for about 15years, awaiting restoration. My fiancé has always said she was going to have it as her wedding car since she was about 10. When I asked her to marry me earlier this year, her dad almost had a heart attack. Not because I asked her, but because he had to actually crack on with the Austin!

They have owned it for around 40years. It was her mums first car, and her grandads before that!

Anyone seen the new 'Twingo'? One parked next to a Rangie in station car park. The rangie didn't dwarf it. It's huge.

Show him this: www.hrdc.eu
The A35 Academy race series might get him going.

Took this quick pic on my phone so quality isn't very good but I liked the union jack roof/mirror similarities.

What's happened to the Mini is the quintessential case of bloating over time. No arguments at all there smile

I would rather say that it proves that the big BMW thingy has no connection with Mini either as a generic name or as a description of the vehicle.

Yup, 12" wheels and chrome arches, just spoil the classic look!

Well not really, as that pic shows a 4 door MINI, MINI being the "brand" not the model.

The R53/R56 and current MINI 2 door hatch are still pretty compact cars in their class. And you certainly couldn't retain the the Mini profile and get the interior space in a modern car much smaller. i.e. other modern cars which are smaller outside, have literally no boot, no interior room or really frumpy styling.

And lets remember, the "Mini" wasn't always seen as so small...
