I have heard that using a dehumidifier in a carcoon dried out seals and plastics.

Only if you take the relative humidity down too far. Have a look at the graphs here

There's a lot of marketing woo and bullst out there but the information on there looks about right from a physics point of view.

40-50% RH is my target inside the garage whether it's in a sealed insulated garage or inside an air chamber.

Mine seems to be stable now at 54% but the dehumidifier is working constantly to maintain that level

If the airchamber itself is providing strong circulation of air, your nicely dehumidified air will be pumped outside to be replaced by outside air that hasn't has the moisture removed...so you may never get to a steady state if the airflow is strong enough.

On a side note, have tried calling Carcoon today with no success about an order....will try again Monday.
I have rung twice in the last week with no reply.
One of the reasons I was trying to speak to them was to see if they'd offer a discount for buying a couple. If I get through tomorrow will ask and post back here with the answer...if they do, might be something you and others on here could leverage....

I suspect you’re right correct but appears the dehumidifier works harder than the 2 Carcoon fans. It’s now sat at 51%, but the dehumidifier is working constantly. I considered disconnecting the fans but then this defeats the object of the Carcoon

I have the largest Airchamber. With one fan disabled the dessicant dehumidifier I have can comfortably maintain 30-50% RH. I set it at around 40%. It only runs intermittently. Perhaps the Carcoon fans pump more air?

You don't need fans if the chamber can.be kept at 45%.
The fans are there for normal garage use without dehumidifers where the airflow is what's stopping condensation forming.
One or the other for me tbh

The only thing I'd worry about is a potential build-up of fuel vapour as older cars' fuel tanks vent directly to the air. Draining the tank would remove that concern.

They aren't perfect seals and if you unzip and vent before walking in with your lit cigarette you'll be fine:-)

That's how I see it too.

The only way the dehumidifer can work is if the air flow is stopped or reduced which rather defeats the purpose of the carcoon/airchamber.

I've never had any issues using a carcoon in a very damp barn.

I've turned the fans off in the Carcoon and left the dehumidifier running to see whether it doesn't have to work as hard.

My concern in having no dehumidifier and the fans running is that the Carcoon is recirculating very damp air. I suspect if my barn was open it would probably provide better conditions for the car but unfortunately my Dutch barn is used for log storage and outdoor entertaining and the other half wouldn't be impressed if she found a car in there.

Somewhere on youtube a chap has done a vid showing rust build up on mild steel compared with outdoor carcoon, outside, and garage. Carcoon performs very well - no sign of any rust after many months and thats without dehumidifying

Managed to get through this morning.

Size I need (Extra Small) isn't in stock. With the current Covid situation they aren't sure when they're going to get some - probably end of the year. Can't specify a colour either.

If 3 were ordered they'd offer a 10% discount.

I'm going to have a mooch around and see if any of the other stockists have any, but suspect they won't of this size.

I got 15% on just one a few years back, but the current economic situation seems to have firmed up the market.

I stumbled across that a few weeks ago and clearly demonstrates the benefits. I've just been to check my deflated Carcoon and am pleased to report that while it's looking a little flacid the dehumidifier isn't running constantly in order to maintain the 50% humidity level.

Since the Veloce is not available straight away I decided to do some insulation that I have been meaning to do for years. So, with the help of a friend, we started out insulating the roof:-

The walls are planks outside and interior MDF-type sheeting, so an air gap in between, but the doors are just plain wood:-

So today we attacked the insulation of the doors:-

60mm of insulation followed by double-sided aluminium with air bubbles (don't know what the real name is!)

The dehumidifier is in place plumbed outside, so now I am going to see just how good it all works before ordering a Veloce. The dehumidifier will, when needed (mild at the moment) be set for 55% so we'll see how it goes and report back.

I have a pair of Carcoons, no problems in two years. I would be interested to know what de-humidifiers you guys are using.

I’m using a Meaco DD8L Junior with a drain hose outside the Carcoon
