By the way, if people think that the dash on a series 2 Beta Spyder is naff, check out the series 3 Beta Berlina. Bonkers, but sort of groovy:-

I thought this was the Trevi?

Yes, but I am fairly sure that this design also featured in late cars badged as Betas (although not Coupes and Spyders as far as I know). I can check my big book of Beta braininess later, but now am off to faff about with coils.

As stated, bin it. I presume you've checked the usual rubbish earths just behind the headlights?

The semi-auto choke is an odd one, maybe that's how they were on the earlier cars. On the VX, which I suppose is after all a different carb, the choke was automatic, with a coolant feed causing a then coil of metal to expand / contract, actuating the choke butterfly.

The dipstick normally breaks off near the end and you'll end up with a collection of broken bits in the sump, which do no harm. Remains of 3 were found in the sump of my VX smile

I lust for a Volumex HPE.

I still haven't got to the garage to kick the car, but will try to go after lunch.

My old one.. lovely car, but sadly a pain to live with as a primary (indeed only) form of transport

I toyed with one as a daily driver, but it didn't happen.

PS: ignore all my nonsense above about the so called choke cable. The cable is the blinking throttle, of course, not the choke, Duhhh.

Pretty good - it must scream like a nutter, and drink like a fish. Moar picz pleese.

I may be switching the Dellorto 45s from my Murena (it only needs 40s), in case you need any spares.
Hopefully not in need of any upgrading - 45's with 38mm chokes.

Actual mpg is not so bad excepting it has a taste for 102 octane if I want to be sure to avoid detonation under high load. For normal use I double dose Shell 99 with Millers VSP.

Horespower is up to a safe 6800 and on strong from 4000rpm

L A N C I A: looks a nice car, involves aggravation.

The new coil is on and the dreadful contraption is off. It is what calls itself a turret immobiliser, and I see from the car's file that it was fitted in 1995.

All well, apart from a minor screen leak in heavy rain. Hey, there's always tape (I also have a couple of Lotuses, so I have lots and lots of tape).

I like this car a lot, but may have to sell it, chiz cheese.

Grazie!

Loving this heap, even though its electrics are still causing some mirth and merriment.

Would love another Beta, Coupe, Convertible of HPE, (had Series 1 1600 HPE 1600 Series 2 Berlina and 2000 HPE iE) - looked for one before I got my first 944, 6 years ago.

VX's are fun, especially the Coupe, with its shorter wheelbase.

All my oil level indicators worked fine - but that was in the '80s!

I have big lust for a Volumex HPE, and once even had an insane plan to run one as a daily driver, but maybe that's a disaster for the future.

Also, I believe the Beta name was dropped entirely in the UK from 1983, with the series 3 cars being Laicia Coupe, or HPE or Trevi.

So did I, but couldn't find one in decent condition, even in 1988! One thing that put me off was the thought that lots of the engine bits are unique IIRC (pistons certainly!) Drove a couple an HPE which I loved but was a heap, and a tweaked Coupe which was mental, and my then wife vetoed as too small.

My Boys' Big Bumper Book of Betas doesn't confirm that, although that doesn't make you wrong, of course, as car books are mostly full of nonsense. The Spyders were discontinued in 1982, with the Coupe, Trevi, and HPE staggering on until 1984.

PS: my Spyder has the registration VLX 320X. That should be on a Volumex Beta, really.

Been there with one of my twin spak (intentional if politically incorrect mis-spelling...) 75s.

Would go brilliantly for ages, then just... stop.

Only the removal of every last vestige of the immobli-iser by a local auto-electrician sorted it out. And then the crank snapped. Bah.

The Beta name was dropped, in the UK at least, because of the rust problems. With the Series 3 cars, the model range was reduced as you say, to the HPE and Coupe, with the saloon changing its name, losing the fastback and any sense of style!

The S3s were much better protected than the earlier cars (Saab or Volvo input I believe), but because they sat around for ages before being sold, they were often just as bad for the buyer! My HPE iE was new 2 Aug 82, YEW931Y just a couple of months after they were introduced, but a friend had one about 200 different on the chassis no, but on a "C" plate! Mine was not rusty even 12 years and 100K, his was at 9 years and 40K!

I loved the Berlina, a real Q car, no one knew what it was even in the '80s, and the HPE iE was such a practical sporting vehicle. I had 10 years of great fun with my Lancias, relatively cheap and very reliable.

I think that my Spyder may have been built in 1979, but it was not registered until December 1981, when I was finishing my first term at university. The car was registered in north west London. It appears to have benefitted from the better rust protection of the later cars, and appears to have spent a fair amount of its life kipping nights in a garage. It has had some welding at the targa bar and arches at some point. It now has HPE arch liners to help protect the inner wings. There are some minor flaky bits here and there around the edges, but nothing too bad. Most of the paint appears to be original. The black vinyl seats have worn well. The odometer is showing a little under 78,000 miles, and the docs with the car suggest that this may be accurate. The engine is as fresh as a daisy, and starts up first time even on freezy-ass mornings like this morning. The apparently original stereo is truly rubbish.

Lovely to hear a bit of the history. Build 79 sold 81 is quite likely. I knew guys at the Lancia dealers in Leicester quite well (one is still the local specialist) and they used to tell me stories like that.

My HPE would not start in the morning, until 10.00, if it had been left outside! If it was in a garage, even unheated, always started! Garage was separate from the house, so no heat transfer. After 10 - no problem.....
