How rare is this Jaguar Coupe?
Discussion
Yes i did it my self, dead easy. The box came from a pre HE xjs and a 4 speed,as far as im aware they only made about 300 of them,i used the xjs grearbox cross member, the manual pedel box from a 4.2 coupe,or you can use one from the 4 door saloon as well,i used the prop which was fitted to the auto with out any modifications, got hold of the floor bolt on extention panel which the gear leaver comes trough, you can use the same starter motor but you have to get the longer bolts for the manual xjs,the only part i wasn,t sure about was the hydrolic rubber pipe to the slave cilinder so i had one made.the gear box is the same as the V12 E type but with 1 extra tooth on the gears. One more thing you have to fit a spigot bearing in the end of the crankshaft.,and that it ,and yes it fly,s.
2 years on and its finally on my drive and all MoT'd up Been a long ride but i have had 2 yrs dry storage for nowt, and the mileage hasnt increased.
briefly, till i get more time, MoT brought up some chassis welding and brake line deterioration duely rectified. Ive had the fuel pums taken out and converted the fueling to a single pump drawing both tanks simultaneously. Various bearings and bushed replaced and a full service and fluids change. She is now running sweetly and pick up her skirt "enthusiastically" . A night time drive round Hayling has revealed the dash lights are not working, no "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" for me, youngsters may want to look that up!! Also found that headlights in the 70's are as bright as the Government was back then.
Rustproofing for me tomorrow, coat the inside in readiness for the carpets, installation by Mrs Jag on Sunday whilst i lay on my back........coating up the underside!!
Leather out for a good clean, again by the fair ladies hand while i attack the bodywork polishing. pink jobs and blue jobs.
Long term things to do;
Sort the windows.........Bit laboured up and down, hopefully strip and clean the mechanism's
Headlining...............any one used the E bay kits for these, if so any good and ease of fitment???
Chrome work..............Polished stainless bumpers available on the Bay, again, anyone got experience of these?
Paintwork................Ideally, for my own satisfaction, a repaint. Looks ok at the moment though not perfect.
Engine bay...............Take out and paint/powdercoat a few of the bits and pieces, again just to smarten it up.
Whilst on the engine bit, has anyone any thoughts on running this on unleaded? will i need to add a lead substitute? be a shame to fook the head up after all the work thus far.
any how, to sum up, the car is alive and well and i intend to smoke it around whenever i can,
i'll get some pics up soon,
Darren

Cheers for the replies chaps,
Ken, pleased to hear about the ally head, saves me a few quid there and gives me peace of mind.
interesting on the stainless bumpers, you'd think for the money they could get them right. Thats a next year job so when it comes to it i may find some originals in better condition than mine.
Seats out today, Lez had a go with the leather' saddle soap and balm, it has really faded over the years but she has managed to get them cleaned up fairly well. i like the creased patina of them, but may have a play with a colour restoring kit at some stage.
i primed up the interior in readyness for fitting the sound sheets and carpet set. Hopefully get this done tomorrow and throw the seats back in.
Whilst the interior was drying out i cut and polished. the bodywork hasnt seen polish in 2 yrs!!
Hopefully get it all together tomorrow before throwing some shooters in the boot and blagging a bank its what these were made for..

I think rechroming the existing bumpers or looking for another set wouldn't cost too much more than buying the s/steel kit. At the Jag spares day in Stoneleigh this year one of the traders was flogging a brand new S2 front bumper for £285, I ummed and arred about it all day, then just before the show closed my mate swooped in and bought it for £225!Ken, pleased to hear about the ally head, saves me a few quid there and gives me peace of mind.

I know this is a S1 saloon but since you mentioned a good old fashioned blag...
(from the 'Sweeney 2' film, released in '78)
I have been restoring my XJ Coupes for a few years and picked up another couple to do during the process. My first was a regency red Daimler Double Six with tobacco leather, Kent Wheels and no vinyl roof. Second was a Jaguar Midnight Blue 4.2 with beige leather and Kents. Third was a quite rare Daimler 4.2 manual overdrive in Lavender which has just come out of the paint shop and looks beautiful. Finally I have another Daimler 4.2 ithat will be Primrose with Black leather and chrome rims. I blame my father who used to take me to school in a variety of XJ's and obviously created a monster. I will echo the comments made in this thread that to buy a rusty one is a fast way to bankruptcy unless you have very deep pockets. Restoring 4 has been an experience
all going well so far, though it did let me down on Sunday. Was going to take it to Brooklands Brekkie meet, 150 mile round trip, nice shakedown and reliability test. Got half a mile up the road and it spluttered to a halt, no tools, no idea why a pissed of Mrs wondering why we had got up so early. I walked back home and grabbed the XJR and off we went leaving the Coupe behind.
Sorted it late, after much head scratching, a dodgy earth to the newly installed fuel pump!!!
Next on the list for me is the headlining, maybe next month!
