It's been a while since I messed with Minis and A series engines, but from memory you can't fit a MG Metro head (big bore) to a small bore engine. You'll be restricted with the 12g295 cooper head or a 12g202.
You can - you need to pocket the block to accept AEG163 or 12G1805 or 12G940 1300 castings. Common practice in Mini Se7en race engines.

Decent inlet +1.5 SU, and LCB/exhaust and a warm cam will liven the Moggy up. See these fellas:-

Pocketing the block seems a bit extreme and the modest 3 bearing crankshaft not up to it probably.
Ill stick to to modest porting and new exhaust manifold and try to improve mid range where ill be 99% of the time.
Also try to find an longer legged diff axle with even a final drive of 4.222.

ahhhh just seen the range of diffs really wide! so no need to change the final drive.

In the Moggy world, 1098 seems to be the way things go. Mine is a standard 1098 and can climb hills easily...

I have the same engine in an A35 (Still on Zenith so even slower than the moggy su carb version)

Simply taking the head off and doing a thorough decoke, reseating the valves and (to help reduce oil burn) fitting later valve stem seals made a massive difference to power.

All it cost was new gaskets and fancy seals from a mini spares website (slightly less good versions of the valve seals are pennies)

Yours is struggling going up hills at 30, mine was too. With just a days work learning and doing the above I think I must have gained about 30% more power and the sound is soooo much better.

Obviously a replacement large valve head would make even more difference but it's amazing how much free power you get reversing 50 years of neglect.
