Any V8 is auto only, in any market. The 6 cyl (early 280's and later 300's) were available in manual certainly in Germany but were all auto in the UK. It may have been possible to spec a manual special order from the factory but I've never seen a UK manual car. On www.mobile.de there are 61 manual R107's to suit any budget. Top of the tree is this one for a hundred grand
Actually, the 350SL (71-80) model R107 was available with a 4-speed manual gearbox and has a V8 engine. They fetch a premium whenever they appear on the market, which is very rarely..

That's an interesting technique... I thought it's got to be tried, so I did it yesterday!
Not sure I will be doing it again, no mishaps, but it puts quite a strain on your neck. Might seem odd to be doing it in spring, but last night my wife and I were on a rare night out at a 40th birtdhay party about an hour's drive away, mostly motorway so we thought a coupe would be the way to go. Sublime. cool

I would never even have thought of trying that - as he says, "don't think of doing this if yours is a garage queen". My neighbour was more than happy to lend a hand. I remember the dealer making me a present of the matching trolley to store it on during the summer. Quite useful that.

When we looked at buying one for LadyB8 the dealer said that most owners brought their cars in in spring and autumn to have the top removed or put back on.

We're talking a main dealer, so I'm sure he'd do it out of the goodness of his own heart and that any fees involved would be a mere courtesy detail.

Thanks for the kind words about my picture, guys. Much appreciated! The kids seem to love squeezing into the rear seats - I think because it's nice and snug, yet they still get a clear view compared to modern convertibles. smile
The rear seats;- how useable are they for longer journeys - child & dog?
And are there any manual box ones abut or are they all autos?
Thanks
As has already been said, there's not too much legroom. I reckon by age 10 the kids will be complaining about their knees (but then I push the drivers seat right back). All our journeys are short and not at high speed. Roof down at motorway speeds and the rear seats get quite a buffeting!

Part of the deal when you bought an SL was main dealer storage of hard tops. Stopped about fifteen years ago iirc.

This was more than 15 years back.
Main dealers were still stocking R107 though the R129 had been around for a few years. LadyB8 preferred the looks of the R107.

Yours always looks lovely Mr W! I think the pentas give the 107 a nice bit of aggressive bite in the looks department.

This weeks episode of the classic car show (channel5, Thursday 7pm) is apparently on the SL; The promo shot was a 107, so it will maybe be of some interest.

He is a horrible greasy, twisted faced, slimy, smarmy toad....Hate him with a passion

There must be so many people who could have presented this show over him

I'm guessing he's nt on your Christmas Card list then, lol ...

Anyway, thanx for the heads up on the show, which having now agreed the purchase of an 89 SL300 I'm keen to see.

Hope to picj the car up in a couple of weeks once a few minor jobs completed and all the fluids are changed to give me a baseline for future maintenance.

I was going to sell my '82 500SL in '07 when the markets crashed. Glad I didn't now, since it's become my everyday driver. It's like driving an 80's sofa that loves petrol, preferably Tesco's 99...
