I saw this one for sale last year when I was looking. Love the 70s colour scheme! They do seem to be cars that people keep for a long time. I'm the second owner of my 420SL; the first one owned it for about 28 years. Mine is a more boring silver, but what really convinced me to get it was the blue hood.

Having a spring clean, and the things I found in the garage are numerous. Including the tool kit from the 1982 380SL, plus a Mk 1 Jaguar tool kit and goodness knows what else!

Is your 420SL a C-Reg ? could I have possibly seen you in it very near to Gants Hill roundabout ?Mine is a more boring silver, but what really convinced me to get it was the blue hood.

Bodywork was done by a place called My Finish which is just outside Manchester. One of the best painters I have come across and overall good value. Takes a while, but the results are worth it.
The mechanical bits (which still have a few final jobs remaining due to time) were done primarily by JBM in Bury, another place which is a bit of man in shed type of place, but he is an ex-Merc mechanic from the appropriate era and knows his way around them very well.
I am not adding up the overall bills until I find myself a nice bottle of Whiskey to numb the pain :-) Worst bits are parts from Mercedes. Wings, Seals and a few bits of new Chrome were eye watering. Rebuilt the existing front lights which makes a huge difference to the appearance.
Not done many 'finished' photo's yet as shortly after the one I posted it lashed it down on the SL trip I was on at the time. But here are a couple of 'during' photo's
The bits that didn't go back in ......

Bulkhead repairs are a nightmare, if it's bad I'd walk away unless you are very good at welding and the car is very cheap. Paying someone to properly repair it will make your wallet cry. Grab the wipers and wiggle hard, any movement is bad, crunching, run away. Good SL's are rarely cheap, cheap ones are rarely good.
That said, i love mine
