Stolen ford cosworth stories...
Discussion
I had two independent (of each other) alarms, an imobiliser, gearstick lock and a hidden switch earthing out the -ve pole of the ignition coil on my RS1600i lookalike XR3.
Twice in two years of ownership people got into it and ripped the sirens out in daylight hours and then tried starting it by hotwiring the +ve side of the coil.
strangely, nobody ever tried stealing any of my RS Mk2 Escorts - probably because they were 'old' cars at the time.

With prices going silly on Parts I can see a huge rise in Spoiler/Bumper/Wheel thefts over the next few years...
Its going to get to the point where its unfeasible to leave a car unattended...
Funny you should say that, I had the front bumper stolen from my sapphire cosworth whilst it was on my drive in the mid 90s.Its going to get to the point where its unfeasible to leave a car unattended...
Remember the cost of the unpainted ford replacement was £600 back then!

For some reason mk6 Fiesta ST's have been the worst effected by this in recent years, it's odd considering they are hardly rare either. Its going to get to the point where its unfeasible to leave a car unattended...
I paid £1700 for a year's insurance on my modified Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 back in 1994. That was a lot of money back then.
Never had it nicked. Brilliant motor. You could drop it down from 5th at 110, with four other blokes in the car (not on the way back from a bank job) and it took off like a rocket. 20 years ago that was really something. The only reason I sold it was because it was so good at everything it did and I wanted some rear-end action (Ooer missus). I went out and bought a TVR. What a twit.

I know someone with an AMG and he found it on bricks minus the whole front clip and front doors!!Its going to get to the point where its unfeasible to leave a car unattended...
Amazing how they stripped it - must have known every clip, nut, bolt etc.
Still an ongoing problem sadly & not just Cossies.
There appears to be a trend just now with Sierra's being the target vehicles for thefts, not just Cosworths but standard models too.
I know of 6 Sierra's that have been nicked & shared on my group since the beginning of December & 9 (Plus one Sierra based P100) have been reported on my group since April last year.
These include 2 3 door Cosworths, a Sapphire Cosworth, a 3 door replica & the rest of them none Cosworth
Moonstone 3 door reg D13COS stolen from High Gate Common, Staffs, 04/04/16
White P100 reg H621BKL stolen from Wivenhoe, 10/09/16
White 3 door reg C232HVW stolen from Barnehurst, Bexleyheath, 23/09/16
White mk2 Sierra reg E10RBT stolen from Manchester area, 06/10/16
Silver Sapphire reg H668LPE stolen from Gainsborough, 02/12/16
Blue 3 door replica reg XIL1301 stolen from Baxenden, between 30/12/16 & 02/01/17
Moonstone Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 reg C10WRS stolen from Ashton Under Lyne, 18/01/17
Tasmin Blue Sapphire 4x4 Ghia reg J546EGC stolen from Shirley/Croydon area, 18/02/17
Red Mk2 Sierra reg G140UFW stolen Garston, Liverpool, 10/03/17 (This one has since been RECOVERED)
White Sapphire 2.0 Ghia Automatic reg E211YVX stolen from Bromley SE20, 27/03/17
The number maybe higher than that, not all of them are shared on social media

However, the tail doesn't end there; the guy who bought dad's original 3 door (D89PTM if anyone knows it) traded through a number of cossies to arrive (after a pools win) at the pinnacle - an RS500. Because of the spate of thefts the only insurance he could get was TP - not even TPF&T.
So, he took security very seriously, and used multiple wheel clamps of a nighttime to secure the beast. One night a theft attempt was made on the car and, presumably because they couldn't move it, they torched it outside his house - not knowing (or not caring) that he had no fire theft. Needless to say the guy was distraught.
Years later this guy bought an Escort Cossie and still has it - it comes out on highdays and holidays.
The majority of the stories regaled in this thread have amused me for the sheer tenacity of the thieves to steal these cars, and of course insurance will pay out. However, the above story genuinely made me sad and annoyed. The fact the thieves were so spiteful that if they couldn’t have the car, no one could. So, he took security very seriously, and used multiple wheel clamps of a nighttime to secure the beast. Glad to hear he’s now enjoying a Cossie again though (or was when you originally posted).

Between '88 and about 2010 my dad had an RS500.
1) he was stabbed outside the house after confronting 2 scum bags trying to steal it. They actually got him in the bks!!
2) came out of his factory to find it being rammed down the road by a Mk 2 Golf (they couldn't get it started so tried pushing it away with the golf). Maybe more to it than that as it doesn't seem to make sense, I was young at the time though and can't really remember.
3) The one time it was successfully taken it was found in a storage container ready to be shipped off a couple of days later
He also got an Escort (Cossie) when they came out and had that until around the same time. As far as I remember nobody ever tried stealing it, even when it was parked on the un-gated driveway for 3-4 years.
They did have a go at my mums Sapphy once while she was in the swimming baths with me though

Only just read this.
K Jetronic does not have a revolving disc ,it has a plunger in the metering unit, the disc is the airflow
regulator.
Good to know. K Jetronic does not have a revolving disc ,it has a plunger in the metering unit, the disc is the airflow
regulator.
But, did It have an Ecu or not??
I know The KE jetronix fitted to the RS Turbo did.
The later 5-door Sierra badged XR4i with the 2-litre 8v DOHC had EEC-IV management with an ECU
